Descendants of
Major James Poe probable sons, Simon Poe and John
Poe established the community of Belfast in what was then Saline
County, now part of Grant County. The family had moved from Anson County, North
Carolina to Fayette County in the 1820s. While many stayed put in Alabama, some
family members decided to move on to Arkansas. They arrived by 1852.
Families from Belfast tell the story of a wagon train of pioneers
traveling together into Arkansas. The site for Belfast was chosen because a
natural stream bubbled from the ground. John Poe who is buried there with his
wife, Sarah Threet, established Poe
Cemetery.

John Poe’s will is dated 26
April 1858. He wrote a codicil dated 5 February 1859, mentioning the change due
to the death of his son, Oliver Perry Poe (wife Mariah Nall).
Oliver Perry Poe had been on a visit from Alabama, where he remained when John
and most of the family relocated to Saline County, Arkansas. John Poe’s will
was “filed for record” on 4 October 1859. Sarah Threet Poe moved to Benton and
is listed there in the 1860 Arkansas census. She is next door to her daughter
Sarah Jane Poe – married to Joab Watson. Sarah died less than two years after
John.

Former Slaves of John and son, Thomas Poe
Gilbert Poe
in the Indian Territory Census of 1900 must be the same Gilbert Poe in
Pulaski Co, AR in 1880 and listed in the will of John Poe in 1859. The age of
35 in 1880 fits the age of 55 for the Indian Territory Gilbert Poe in 1900.
And, we see that wife Caroline and son Lewis (age 8 in 1880) is next in the
1900 census aged 27. Another former slave I want to track is Robert Poe. He
was 42 in 1870. He and wife were born in North Carolina. In the 1870 census
we see that most children were "at school". Robert stayed nearby
the old Poe farm in Grant (Saline) County, Arkansas, where he had been a
slave, identified in the will of John Poe. http://www.poegen.net/Census/AR/ARgrantCo1870robertPoeBlackNC1.jpg 1859 1910 http://www.poegen.net/Census/OK/OKwagonerCo1910_GilbertPoe.gif Gilbert is listed as a farmer in
Indian Territory and his son is a laborer. Son Lewis is a day laborer --
probably on his father's or nearby farms. |

William Threet Poe’s land was
located in what is now Grant County. It is described in the tax records:

all in township 4 South of

William Threet Poe
had three wives. His
first two wives Sarah Reynolds and Rosty Reynolds
were sisters. Rosty had been married to Thomas Poe
(William Threet's brother) until his death.
Thomas's children and W. T.'s children were raised together. William
Threet Poe lived in Pickens Co., AL where he probably met the Reynolds family
as this is one of the few places in the census reports where Reynolds may be
found. |

The Reynolds probably came from Northern
SC along the Pee Dee River downstream from where the Poe's were settled in
Anson Co, NC. The Threet family also lived in this area of SC. More Reynolds,
see 1820 SC census for counties of Kershaw, Newberry, Charter Originally
probably from VA. After the Civil War W. T. redeemed many of his
relatives' lands by paying the taxes.

Excerpt from a letter of
"Doc" Walton's (Winfred Walton, son of Sarah Alma Poe and Dr. James
Wyatt Walton - son of James Walton and Amy Angelina Poe):
Simon Poe of Fayette County Alabama gave his daughter,
Gatsy Lucas wife of Thomas Lucas a Negro
Woman Slave and her four children. This deed was recorded in Fayette County
Ala. 27 Nov. 1850 and was notarized by Calvin
Poe, Justice of The Peace. It was later recorded in Saline County,
Ark. ( 8 Sept. 1858). . Thomas and Gatsy L were the
[?] of [?] Glenn (mentioned above). We think our Simon B. Poe was a
son of this Simon Poe and a [?] James Poe*. If so Mrs. Glenn and Dads
Mother [Amy Angelina Poe] were first cousin (Gatsy
would actually be Amy Angelina Poe's aunt). This Deed is. recorded in Record
Book E, Volume 6 Page 292 in. Fayette Co., Ala. and is dated 2 Dec. 1850. It is
1870 Grant County Census recorded in. Deed Book E Page 413 S, September 1858.
* The estate papers of
Simon Poe show that Simon B. Poe was not his son as he only had daughters,
deepening the mystery as to where Simon B Poe fits into the family tree.

Ruby Poe (1879-1891)
Born in Clinton, Arkansas, in 1879, Ruby
Poe was a younger sister of Mrs. Helen Tompkins of Prescott. She had come
to Prescott to attend school. She died of "slow fever", also
known as bruecellosis or undulant fever. She
had had the fever some time but remained up and about. Her condition
worsened suddenly, and she died on November 10, 1891. "Slow
fever" was a common cause of death in this era.
** Transcriber note: Ruby's mother is Lelia A.
Brown, 2nd wife of William Thomas Poe.
Helen's mother is Tabitha Unknown, 1st wife of
William. **
Helen Poe Tompkins (1866-1932)
Born on February 4, 1866 at West Point,
Arkansas, Helen Nancy Poe was the daughter of Major
W. T. Poe and his wife Lelia
Brown. Her father served with General Lee in Virginia and in J.E.B.
Stuart's Cavalry. The Poe family had come to Arkansas from Alabama.
Helen Poe married W. V. Tompkins at Clinton, Arkansas, on November 20, 1884,
and moved to Prescott. She and her husband had a son and a
daughter. She died at home in Prescott on September 13, 1932.
William Vernon Tompkins (1861-1953)
Born on December 16, 1861, at West Point
in White County, Arkansas, W. V. Tompkins was the son of William Temple
Tompkins, A Virginian, and Mary Hope, a Tennessean. His father was killed
during Civil War. Tompkins was raised and educated by his mother and J.
C. Bradshaw, his step-father, at Clinton, Van Buren County, Arkansas. He
attended college at Quitman in 1878 and 1879 and became interested in the
law. He progressed quickly in his studies and was licensed to practice in
circuit courts on February 14, 1883.
Shortly afterwards, Tompkins came to
Prescott and formed a law partnership with W. E. Atkinson in April 1883.
In June 1884, he was licensed to practice before the Arkansas Supreme
Court. He returned to Clinton to marry Helen Nancy Poe in November
1884. In 1888, he formed a law practice with M. W. Greeson which was
finally dissolved in January 1899. In 1895, President Cleveland appointed
Tompkins as Mineral Land Commissioner to classify the Northern Pacific Land
Grant in western Montana. He continued in this work for four years before
resigning and returning to Prescott. In 1903, he entered into law
practice with T. C. McRae. This partnership continued until McRae's death
in 1929.
Tompkins was active in politics and in
his community. At various times, he served on the Prescott school
board. He was city recorder in 1899 and in 1900-1901 and assisted in
drawing up the ordinances for the City of Prescott. He was a Democratic
Presidential Elector in 1892 when Cleveland was nominated. He was General
Attorney for the Arkansas Anti-Saloon League in 1900. He was President of
the Arkansas Bar Association in 1910-1911. He was chairman of the State
Democratic Central Committee in 1920-1924. He and his wife joined the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Prescott in 1892. He was elected an
elder in 1898 and to the Board of Trustees of Arkansas Cumberland College (now
College of the Ozarks) later that same year. He remained on the Board for
many years. He also was a member of the Arkansas Committee of the
Presbyterian Board of National Missions.
Tompkins was noted for his humor and
remained active in his law practice until the time of his death. He died
in his home in Prescott of a cerebral hemorrhage on February 15, 1953.
His son, Charles H. Tompkins (1889-1975), who was also an attorney, and his
wife Hazel Scott Tompkins (1899-1968), a member of the prominent Scott family,
are also in the Old Section.

Capt. James A. Poe was in the Civil War (Company A, Gause's
Ark. Regiment) and 3rd greatgrandfather Capt. R.H.
Poe (Quartermaster, Glenn's Regiment, Ark. Inf.). His other son Richard
Razy Poe was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 32nd or 38th
Ark Inf. They all moved from Alabama in abt 1855 and resided in the area until after
1870. RH Poe was allowed to resign his commission and leave the
army in 1863 because he operated the only grist mill in White Co., and the
citizens petitioned the army to discharge him so he could work
it. I have a copy of that petition with about 50 signatures of
local residents of the area at that time, if you're interested. Robert L Woodham ------------------------ http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/32p-spr.htm M-317 Compiled Service Records - 32nd

From a Descendant of Laban C. Elliott and Martha Jane Poe http://www.poegen.net/Census/AR/ARwhiteCo1860redRiver_LabanCelliottMarthaJanePoe.jpg Laban appears out of nowhere in the 1860 census in White
county. The only connection I have at all to Fayette County is the
tombstone of his first dau Francis F Elliott.
Then according to the census records they were somewhere in MS for a time
prior to arriving in White Co. There is possibly another connection
that may help me along the way...not sure. In Little Rock, where a
number of my Elliott family is buried, Roselawn cemetery, beside my kin is a
Dr. James Edwin Elliott and his sister Minnie. I traced them down to
being children of a Conway Elliott son of Samuel Elliott & Winney Dodd Swafford. Samuel says he was born in
NC in the 1850 Saline County, AR census but he died shortly after so we
only have that one to go by.. His son Conway in 1880 says both parents
were from NC. The reason I bring them up is the fact that they too came
from AL and settled in Saline County where a number of Poes
settled. Because the children are buried along with my Elliotts I am forced to think that perhaps they may be
related. Maybe Laban and Samuel as brothers. At this point
however, I cannot find Laban in any census prior to 1860 nor after 1870 -------- Laban and Martha's first child was a girl named Francis F
Elliott b. 28 Apr 1846 in Alabama. I found where Francis F Elliott
married Napolean B Hilger
of West Point, White County, AR on 21 May 1868 and that she died 3 Mar 1869,
buried Howell Cemetery, White County. I went to the grave to find that
on her tombstone it listed her place of birth as Fayette County, AL. thus
placing my Laban Elliott and his wife Martha (Mattie) Poe Elliott in Fayette
County around 1846. http://www.poegen.net/Census/AR/ARwhiteCo1870labanCelliottMarthaJanePoe_2.jpg Lebourn Elliot age 45,
