HISTORY OF PEAVEY CEMETERY
written by J. Wesley
Edmonson (1888-1971)
John B, Poe, an early settler of Lewis Township
(Clay County, IN),
entered the land on
February 18, 1836, at which time Andrew Jackson
was President.
This burial plot did
not become public property until 1863, when John
B. Poe deeded the plot
to A.J. Baker, who was trustee of Lewis
Township at that
time. Mr. Poe left Lewis Township, but in August
1881, at the age of 99
years, he was returned to be buried.

HISTORY OF CLAY COUNTY
An Old-Time Wolf Hunt.
On the 14th day of February 1848, the counties of
Clay, Owen,
Greene, Sullivan and
Vigo joined in a big chase to rid the territory com-
prised within their borders
of the numerous ravenous wolves which were
playing havoc with
small stock that winter. More than a thousand square
miles of territory were
embraced within the circle of this chase, and hun-
dreds of interested and
determined people of the respective counties par-
ticipated in the drive. The
half-mile Center circle, or closing ground, was
staked off in Eel river
bottom, a little distance south of New Brunswick.
The captains in command
were Elias Cooprider and Joseph Griffith, Sr.,
with several aids, for
Harrison township; Joseph Puckett, John J. Lan-
fling, Dck North and John Neal, for Lewis township; Isaac Sexton,
Allen
McBride, Wyatt Johnson,
with their aids, for Sullivan county; Rev. Rich-
ard Wright, Alexander Poe,
Dick Lambert, John Standley, Ned Combs,
Enos Huey, and Elias Dayhuff, for Greene
county; Aaron Hubbell, Alex-
ander Winters, Jesse Ragan,
Adam Slough and the Littlejohns, for Owen
county.

file The
ancestors of William "Billy" Poe
have been successful in raising funding for a marker for him and his two
wives. A dedication service is being planned to take place June 19, 2004 at
4:00 CDST at the Union Chapel Cemetery located in Whiskey Run Township,
Crawford County, IN. Here is a copy of the obit that I have prepared and it
will be on the third page of the hand-out program at the dedication. William
"Billy" Poe was born 10 MAR 1807 in Ohio to JEREMIAH Poe and HANNAH DOAN. He
married ELIZA ANN CRECELIUS,
daughter of JACOB and CHRISTENA LEWIS CRECELIUS (formerly from Green County,
TN) on 20 JAN 1833 in Crawford County, IN. During the eleven years of
this marriage they became the parents of 6 children: Eli; William Henry;
Jeremiah; Elisha; Elijah and Jacob. Eliza Ann died 04 JAN 1844. William's
second marriage was to SUSAN ELIZABETH HARRISON, daughter of THOMAS
G. and ELIZABETH ALDRED HARRISON. This marriage took place 16 JUN 1845
in Orange County, IN. The children born of this marriage were: Eliza Ann;
Malinda; Mary; Bennett; Isaac; Adam; Ruth; Lucinda and George. William
death 05 DEC 1882 ended this marriage of 34 years. Susan died 01 JAN 1902. One
hundred sixty years after Eliza's death; One
hundred twenty two years after William's death; One
hundred two years after Susan's death; the
Poe Family Descendents have seen that these
unmarked graves will be marked forever. A
special thanks to Don Totten of California for his research and to the late
Beatrice Baylor for writing the letter in 1961 to Don confirming the
burial location of William, Eliza, Susan and Bennett. |

* according to others' research
the will of Benjamin Poe of Gibson Co. was recorded 27 April 1840. He was born
around 1775 and had children George Washington Poe b 1801, KY; Nancy Poe b 1805
IN(?); Greenup Poe b 1810 KY; Amanda McGary b
1814 KY; and Emily Hawkins b ?
Note that
Lawrence County, Kentucky, where we find Poe families, was formed from Floyd
and Greenup Counties. It was created on 14 Dec 1821. The name Greenup is
so unusual, surely there is a connection to the county. Floyd Co, KY appears to
be an area where the Amelia / Prince Edward County, Virginia Poe families
settled.
