Notes for William Poe

This genealogical file covering the Southern Indiana branch of Poe and related families is based upon data that has been acquired by numerous individuals over an extensive period.  These data sources will only be partially documented within this file at this time.  Hopefully they will be more completely documented in the future.  I will mention that this Personal Ancestral File, PAF, has been merged with data from a Family Tree Maker File, FTW, prepared by Patricia Ann (Lamppin) Lanning, based upon her and Evelyn Gayle (Harper) Jackson’s research.

The following letter has been very helpful in identifying the early members of this branch of the family.  Copies were obtained from both Olive Eleanor Poe and Adam Poe’s daughter, Lela “Opal” (Poe) Whitaker.

From:    Adam Poe                                                                   June 21, 1931

             Collinsville, Miss.

      To:        Miss Olive Poe

              Marengo, Indiana

Dear Olive:

Your letter of the 14th rec'd Thursday.  Your Aunt Anna and I was greatly pleased to hear from you.  We are well at this time and have been having good health for the past two years.  We both had Pneumonia two years ago Xmas and almost lost your Aunt.  She was in bed for five months.  It almost ruined us but we are still able to eat three meals a day.

Now about the Poes.  I am sorry that none of us know much about them.  We can only trace them back to Germany and I can’t remember the one’s name that came over,  (----) Poe.  He had four sons, George, William, John and one more, I don’t know his name.  (don’t know his wife’s name)  William had Jeremiah and Jesse.  (These all lived in Virginia.)  Jeremiah went to North Carolina and married Hannah Doane.  Jeremiah is my Grand Father.  He raised ten sons and two daughters, William, Jacob, Elisha, John, Jeremiah, Basil, Susan, Jonathan, Jesse, Hannah, Pinckney and Ira.  William, his oldest son born March 10, 1807 in what is now Clinton Co. Ohio, married Eliza Ann Crezelous about 1831 or 32.  They had Eli 1834, Wm. Henry 1836, Jeremiah 1838, Elisha and Elijah 1840 and Jacob 1844.  Eliza Ann died July 4, 1844.  William married again Susan E. Harrison in 1845.  They had Eliza Ann, Melinda, Mary E., Lucinda K., George I. And one died an infant, (a son).  I have not got the date of the women.  I think sister Lucy has and I will write her and find out.  She has the old family Record.

You can see (if you can read this bad writing) that - Jeremiah Poe and his son William had large families.  We don’t know, as you can see, the name of our Great-Great-Grand Father Poe who came from Germany nor his wife.  We don’t know the name of our Great-Grand Father William’s wife.  They lived in Virginia.  Grand Father Jeremiah married in North Carolina and moved to Ohio about 1806 and came to Indiana in 1814.  He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and 15.  We have always had a tradition that our Great Great Grand Father William (Note: probably meant Great-Grand Father - DRT) and his brothers was soldiers in the Revolutionary War but no one has a record of it.

I don’t remember the date of your Great-Grand Mother’s birth nor my Mother’s birth either but your Grand Father was born Feb. 8, 1836.

Now Aunt Anna sends her love.  Carrie married three years ago in April and we had a letter from her a few days ago.  She lives North of us in Kemper Co.  Give our love to all Marengo and write us another good big letter.

      Your old uncle,

                                                                                                   A. Poe

Additional Notes:  See notes for brother John Poe.

Children of William Poe were as follows:

+    6          i           Jeremiah "Jerry"3 Poe Sr. [208], born 1780/90 in Virginia; died 1827/30 in Orange Co. IN; buried in Old Unity Cem. Crawford Co. IN.  He married Hannah Doane [209].

      7          ii          Jesse3 Poe [222], born 1780/90 in Virginia.

Generation 3

6. Jeremiah "Jerry"3 Poe Sr. [208] (William2, (----)1), born 1780/90 in Virginia; died 1827/30 in Orange Co. IN; buried in Old Unity Cem. Crawford Co. IN.  He married in 1800/06 in North Carolina Hannah Doane [209], born 1780/90 in North Carolina; died Sep 1839 in Orange Co. IN; buried in Old Unity Cem. Crawford Co. IN, daughter of Jacob Doane [227] and Hannah (---) [228].

Indiana Gazette:  List of letters in the Corydon Post office  in 1821 among names Benjamin Boston and Jeremiah Poe.

      130 Bruce Street

Salem, Indiana

May 14, 1963

Dear Don,

I recently acquired the first minute book of the ¿Old Unity

Church" which used to be situated on a tract of land near where

the Cemetery is now situated, but is now extinct and torn down.

This minute book is in the possession of the Clerk of the Hardinsburg

Baptist Church, which merged with the Old Unity Church. The minister

of the Church is a friend of the family, and was kind enough to

bring the book up and let me keep it for a week and copy some of

the material from it. I found some names in it, which 1 know you

will be interested in also.  This church was organized in June of

1818.

The first minutes contained the following:

"June the first Saturday, 1818. After being Regular Constituted

and declared to be a Church, proceeded to business.

1st. Opened a door for the Reception of members-- and received

Jeremiah Poe by experance."

Later, on the 2nd page of minutes- was the following:

"First Saturday in July, 1818.  Church met and after divine Worship

proseded to business.

1st. Received by Letter, Polley Totten, Mary Turley and

Elizabeth Riley,"

and on the 3rd page of minutes -

"First Saturday in April, 1819-

Church met and after divine worship proseded to business.

1st, Received by Expearance Hannah: Poe and Richard Tadlock.

Received Sister Anna Whitman by Letter. "

so, you see- your Jeremiah foe and Hannah Poe, and Polley Totten

were the first settlers in that community, and were among the very

first to organize the church. The Anna Whitman above, is my ancestor,

who was the Anna Storms Whitman, wife of John. Jeremiah Poe' s name

was mentioned numerous times in the minutes on committees, etc, so

he was evidently one of the main ones conducting church affairs.

and the minutes of Saturday, the first in June, 1819-

"Received by Letter, Sister Mary Whitman."

according to Mr. Calico, John Whitman's mothers name was Mary- so

this evidently is the mother of John who joined the church in 1819.

according to the records, she asked for a letter of dismissal in

November, 1820, was granted one- but the first Saturday in July,

1826, a Brother Jonathan Low, Elizabeth, his wife, and Sister Mary

Whitman, were again received into the Church by letter from Hillsborough

Church, and on the first Saturday in March, 1827, the two Low's and

Sister Mary Whitman were all granted letters of dismission from the

Church, and they are mentioned no more.    I wonder if these Low's

were relation to the Whitman's - since she joined the church at the

same time they did, and was granted a dismissal at the same time, I

just wondered perhaps, if they were connected someway. I have failed

yet to find anyone around here, who knows where the Hillsborough Church

was - but evidently it was somewhere in Crawford, Harrison or Orange

Counties, as that church was mentioned two or three times in the minutes,

as being a part of the Association to which the Unity Church also belonged,

John Whitman did not join the church until the first Saturday in June,

1.847 and James Whitman and Elisa Whitman, his wife (who was a son of

John and Anna) joined the church on Sunday in June, 1856.

The membership roll in the back of the minute book contained the

name of each member from the organization in June 1818 to October 1858,

when the minute book ended- and the second minute book is unavailable

as yet to the minister of the church, as an individual member has the

book and will not turn it over, but 1 understand that there is going

to be a lawsuit over regaining possession, if she does not relinquish

it soon. Apparently it contains some undesirable information about

some of this person's family, and she does not wish other people to

learn of this.

Your Jeremiah Poe and Polly Totton are the first two members

listed in the membership roll, after the names of the ones who constituted

the church.   There were about two hundred names listed in the membership

roll, and I will list all of the Poe's, Tottons and Whitmans which were

there:

Name             Date Received    How Received        How Dismissed

Jeremiah Poe         June 1818         Experience                By Death

Polly Totton            July 1818           Letter                        By Death

Hanah Poe             April 1819          Experience                Sept.l859-Death

Anna Whitman        April 1810          Letter

Mary Whitman        June 1819         Letter                         Nov.l820-Letter

Mary Whitman        July 1826           Letter                        Mar.1827   "

John Whitman        June 1847          Letter                        Sept.1854  "

Lydia Whitman        Aug. 1852          Experience

James Whitman     June 1856          Experience

.Elisa Whitman        June 1856          Experience

I'm sure this information will not open any channels toward

finding any missing ancestors, however, I did think it was interesting

to find out that some of our early ancestors were members of the Old

Unity Regular Baptist Faith, and that they took an early part in the

organization of our country- I thought perhaps you too, will enjoy

adding these bits to your records.

Yours truly,

        Clara Marie Burns

P.S.   After checking the list of sur-names of your ancestors, I rechecked the lists for Doans - Crecelius - Neal, etc and found none, except one

¿Sally Neal - October 1856 by letter¿

============================================================

The Steven museum in Salem IN has a copy of  the 1858 will/estate settlement of Hannah's father, Jacob Doan.  Daughters Hannah Poe and Lydia Cooper appear to be deceased when Jacob died since he left bequests to the children of both these daughters.  Copies of Washington County Court documents pertaining to Jacob Doan's estate settlement were provided to us by Clara Marie Burns of Salem, IN.  Copies of these documents are included with the notes for Jacob Doan.

Children of Jeremiah "Jerry" Poe Sr. and Hannah Doane were as follows:

+    8          i           William "Billy"4 Poe [192], born 10 Mar 1807 in Clinton Co. OH; died 5 Dec 1882 in Crawford Co. IN; buried in Union Chapel Cem. Crawford Co. IN.  He married (1) Eliza Ann Crecelius [194]; (2) Susan Elizabeth Harrison [193].

+    9          ii          Jacob "Jake"4 Poe [210], born abt 1808 in Clinton Co. OH; died Aft. 1880 in Crawford Co. IN; buried in Union Chapel Cem. Crawford Co. IN.  He married (1) Indiana Boston [280]; (2) Sarah Brown Jenkins [4219].

10        iii         Elisha4 Poe [211], born abt 1810.   Notes: There is an Elisha Poe listed as living in Morgan Twp. Harrison County, IN in the 1830 census.  Both he and his wife are listed as being between 20 and 30 years old.  This Eisha is probably the son of Jeremiah and Hannah Poe, but further research is required.

      11        iv         John4 Poe [212], born abt 1811.

12        v          Jeremiah4 Poe Jr. [213], born abt 1812.   Notes: It is noted that there were four Poe families listed as living in Clay Twp. Morgan County, IN in the 1850 census.  These were the families of Jeremiah Poe, Jesse R. Poe, John W. Poe and William Poe.  Jeremiah and Jesse are listed as being 37 and 43 years old respectively, both born in Ohio.  Jeremiah listed five children all born in IN.  Jesse listed three children born in NC, three in KY and one in IN.  John W. and William are listed as being 62 and 32 years old respectively, both born in NC.  John W. listed three children born in NC and William listed five children born in IN.  Later census records are compatible with these 1850 listings and indicate that a number of these Poe's including Jesse remained in Morgan County.  It seems unlikely that this Jeremiah Poe and this Jesse Poe are the sons of Jeremiah Poe and Hannah Doane.  More research is needed to establish the relationship with these Morgan County, IN Poe families.   Could they be close cousins, such as descendants of our Jeremiah Poe's brother Jesse?

      13        vi         Basil4 Poe [214], born abt 1814.

+    14        vii        Susannah "Susan"4 Poe [215], born abt 1816 in IN; died in Sedalia, Pettis Co. MO.  She married William H. (Mays) Maize [4804].

+    15        viii       Johnathan4 Poe [216], born abt 1819.  He married Lucinda (----) [4848].

16        ix         Jesse4 Poe [217], born abt 1820.   Notes: It is noted that there were four Poe families listed as living in Clay Twp. Dear Donald:

I will try and answer your letter.  I am one of Corda¿s girls, Beatrice.  Mother is not to well now.  She has been having some heart trouble this fall.  She is up about all the time and does some work, mostly the cooking and dish washing.

You ask about Uncle Russell and Melvin.  Uncle Russell is in Jonesboro, Indiana, 310 3rd Ave. and Uncle Melvin is in Calamus, Iowa.  He has remarried and has two daughters.  The older two are married.  Gene has adopted son and Arlene has twin sons.  Uncle Russell¿s children are all three married and he has 9 grandchildren.

You ask about the graves.  They are at Union Chapel and they are unmarked.  Mother and us girls have kept them up and we mowed them off.  They are William Poe and his first wife Eliza Ann Crecelius Poe and his second wife Susan Elizabeth Harris Poe and another one which Mother thinks is one of the children.

We don¿t know much about the older Poes.  The first children were Jerry, Henry, Elige and Elisha Poe and the second were Mary Elizabeth Totten, Eliza Ann Jones, Ruth Randon, Linda Mills, Lucinda Katheryn Dunn, Adam and George Poe.  When Uncle Adam was here he could talk about the older ones but I have thought so many times why I didn¿t set down lot of things he told us but it¿s too late now for he died in a short time after he went home.  He might have lived in Alabama but he was living in Collinsville, Mississippi, Lauderdale County.  He just had one daughter Opal.  Her and Mother always exchange letters at Christmas time.  Her address is Mrs. Opal Whitaker 320 ½ U. Palm Dr. Beverly Hills, Calif.  Last Christmas she wasn¿t very well and one of her girls wrote the letter.

We haven¿t got but one picture and it is Great Grandmother Dunn / Great Grandmother Dunn together.  We have it framed.  (Note: I believe she meant Dunn / Baylor.  At any rate I made a copy of this photograph. DRT)

I sure do wish you good luck and hope you can find some one who can tell you what you want to know.  I would love to read your book after you get it done.  I am sorry that we couldn¿t help you any and I am also sorry I didn¿t ask Uncle Adam a lot about the family but I didn¿t think so much about it then.  He was such a nice old man (84) and we enjoyed having him so much.

Was glad to here from you and if you are ever here we can take you to the graves.  Will be more than glad to.

      As ever

Notes for Jacob "Jake" Poe

The listing of The Union Chapel Cemetery, Crawford Co. IN  as Jacob Poe's burial site is based upon statements made by Corda and Beatrice Baylor.  They stated that Jacob Poe was also buried in an unmarked grave a short distance away from where his brother William is buried.  My recollection is hazy, but I seem to remember that they showed me a slightly sunken area some ten feet or so east of William's grave site, which was at the base of a large fir tree, where they believed that Jacob was buried.  I don't remember whether we discussed the possibility of his second wife being buried near by.  I also do not remember whether we discussed why Jacob was buried In the Union Chapel Cemetery instead of in the Old Unity Cemetery where his daughter and possibly his parents and first wife were buried. - DRT

Notes for Indiana Boston

Indiana Boston Poe is thought to be the daulghter of Benjamin Boston and Sarah Looney.  There is no proof at this time but researchers believe this to be quite likely for there is a female child of unknown name of her age found in Benjamin Boston's census records.

Notes for Sarah Brown Jenkins

      Posted by Patricia A. Lanning:

Sarah was the widow of Alexander Batman, son of John Batman and Mary Brown.  Sarah, Alexander, and Jeremiah are living with Jerimiah Jenkins in the census of 1850 of Crawford Co, Whiskey run Township, IN. Dwelling and Family # 581.( Note by DRT: This 1850 Census listing shows: Jeremiah Jenkins 60 yrs. old born in Virginia, his wife Martha 45 yrs. old born in Kentucky, son Elijah 19 yrs. old born in Crawford Co. Alexander Batman 24 yrs. old born in Crawford Co. Sarah Batman 20 yrs. old born in Crawford Co. and Jeremiah Batman 6/12 yrs. old born in Crawford Co.)  There is a record of  Martha "Patsy" Spencer and  Jeremiah Jenkins marrying 29 May 1815 in Corydon, Harrison Co, IN.  Jeremiah was born c. 1790 in Virginia.  The Martha in the census of 1850 is 45 and born in Kentucky.  (Note  by DRT: The apparent age descrepancy needs to be reconciled.  It is also interesting to note that Jeremiah and Martha Jenkins were living as neighbors to the families of James Spencer and Samuel Jenkins in the 1850 census.  James Spencer was listed as being 89 yrs. old born in Virginia and his apparent wife Lucinda is 97 yrs. old born in Virginia.  There is also an Elisha Jenkins 18 yrs. old born in Crawford Co. and his apparent wife Caroline Jenkins 17 yrs. old born in Crawford Co. listed as living with James and Lucinda Spencer.  The other neighboring family list Samuel Jenkins 22 yrs. old born in Crawford Co. his wife Margaret 24 yrs. old born in Kentucky and their daughter Catharine 1 yr. old born in Crawford Co.

Ira Poe was born 1 November 1827 in Crawford County, Indiana and died 12 November 1888.  He married 1st to Catherine Britton before 1868.  He married 3nd Sophina Ann Chastain (See Chastain family) born 13 August 1868 in Paris, Edgar Co., Illinois, daughter of John Chastain and Malona Shirie.

Ira at the age of 18 years volunteered to serve in the Mexican American war.  Of the 100 boys in his regiment that the doctors examined, they pronounced him the best, most perfect, build of them all.  He was of German and English extraction, 5 foot 10 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds.  He had blue gray eyes and black curly hair.

After the war, he returned home, well and sound and married Catherine Britton.  They had seven children, three dying in infancy.  Three boys and a girl lived to maturity.  Ira volunteered for the civil war, lost his wife Catherine, during this war.  When he returned he married a second time but she only lived about eighteen months.  Around two years later he met and married Sophina Ann Chastain Rogers, the widow of John Alexander Rogers and the mother of three children; John Alexander Rogers Jr., Tylitha Jane Rogers and James Madison Rogers.  Ira and Sophina married on 3 August 1868 in Paris, Illinois and set up housekeeping with an "instant" family of seven children between them.  Over the next years they would have five daughters, one dying in infancy.

On 10 September 1879, Ira moved his family to Cowley Co., Kansas and homesteaded 15 miles Northeast of Winfield, Kansas.  He was a very hard working man and his health broke when he was only 56 years of age.  He died 5 years later on 12 November 1888 of a complication of diseases that were aggravated by hard work and the privations of a new country.  Ira was a Unitarian and just before he died he told his wife that "he felt like taking his family in his arms and flying away to heaven.

After Ira's death, Sophina lived with a daughter in Spokane, Washington.  She was nearing 88 years of age when she died in 1925 and after her death she was buried in Wilmot, Kansas next to her husband.

Children of Ira Poe and Catherine Britton were:

 i. George Poe

      8 - William Chastain & Mary Kelly

William Chastain was born in Georgia.  He married Mary Kelly who was the daughter of a Kelly and her mother was a Beasley.  William was a Baptist minister.

William Chastain and Mary Kelly had one known son:

 i. John Chastain was born in Alabama (See below)

7 - John Chastain & Malona Shirie

John Chastain was born in Alabama and married Malona Shirie.  They had seven boys and six girls.  At present only two of the girls names are known, Sophina Ann and Nancy.  John and two of his sons were union sympathizers and during the War Between the States they served with the Union army.  His two boys went to Paris, Illinois and volunteered in the Union army there.  They marched back South with Sherman, going through the town where they had once lived.  Their mother, Mary (Note: ?) and their aunt Nancy were still living there.  They boys were allowed to stay the night with them and the next morning their sisters, Sophina and Nancy went with them to where their regiment was camped.  Afterwards Sophina and Nancy followed the family to Illinois. Two sons remained in Georgia and served in the Confederacy.  This was a family divided with two brothers fighting in the Union army and two in the Confederacy.

John Chastain and Malona Shirie were the parents of thirteen children.  The two known daughters are as follows:

 i. Sophina Ann Chastain was born 8 September 1837 (See below)

6 - Sophina Ann Chastain & Ira Poe

Sophina Ann Chastain was born 8 September 1837 in Cass Co., (now Bartow Co.), Georgia and grew to womanhood there.  In 1857 she married John Alexander Rogers and they had three sons.  At the onset of the civil war, John was conscripted into the Confederate States Army.  Being a northern sympathizer he deserted and went to the Union army.  Some soldiers that had already done that turned out to be spies.  They deserted to the north, got secrets of military movements and then returned to the confederate army and divulged the Union plans.  By the time John and his group of men deserted, the Union army, being suspicious, held them as prisoners of war.  They were sent to Indianapolis, Indiana where John died.

Once in Paris, Illinois, Sophina met Ira Poe, the widower of Catherine Britton and father of four children still living.  Sophina had three children by her 1st husband John Rogers.  She and Ira married in Paris, Tennessee (Note: ?) on 3 August 1868 and set up housekeeping with an "instant" family of seven children between them.  Over the next years they had five daughters, one dying in infancy.  (See Poe family for continuation of this family)
