Your letter of the 14th rec'd Thursday.
Your Aunt Anna and I was greatly pleased to hear from you. We are well at this time and have been having
good health for the past two years. We
both had Pneumonia two years ago Xmas and almost lost your Aunt. She was in bed for five months. It almost ruined us but we are still able to

Now about the Poes. I am sorry that none of us know much about

Dear
Don,
I
recently acquired the first minute book of the ¿Old Unity
Church"
which used to be situated on a tract of land near where
the
Cemetery is now situated, but is now extinct and torn down.
This
minute book is in the possession of the Clerk of the Hardinsburg
of
the Church is a friend of the family, and was kind enough to
bring
the book up and let me keep it for a week and copy some of
the
material from it. I found some names in it, which 1 know you
will
be interested in also. This church was organized
in June of
1818.
The
first minutes contained the following:
"June
the first Saturday, 1818. After being Regular Constituted
and
declared to be a Church, proceeded to business.
1st.
Opened a door for the Reception of members-- and received
Jeremiah
Poe by experance."
Later,
on the 2nd page of minutes- was the following:
"First
Saturday in July, 1818. Church met and
after divine Worship
proseded
to business.
1st.
Received by Letter, Polley Totten,
Mary Turley and
Elizabeth
Riley,"
and
on the 3rd page of minutes -
"First
Saturday in April, 1819-
Church
met and after divine worship proseded to business.
1st,
Received by Expearance Hannah: Poe and Richard Tadlock.
Received
Sister Anna Whitman by Letter. "
so,
you see- your Jeremiah foe and Hannah Poe, and Polley
Totten
were
the first settlers in that community, and were among the very
first
to organize the church. The Anna Whitman above, is my ancestor,
who
was the Anna Storms Whitman, wife of John. Jeremiah Poe' s name
was
mentioned numerous times in the minutes on committees, etc, so
he
was evidently one of the main ones conducting church affairs.
and
the minutes of Saturday, the first in June, 1819-
"Received
by Letter, Sister Mary Whitman."
according
to Mr. Calico, John Whitman's mothers name was Mary- so
this
evidently is the mother of John who joined the church in 1819.
according
to the records, she asked for a letter of dismissal in
November,
1820, was granted one- but the first Saturday in July,
1826,
a Brother Jonathan Low, Elizabeth, his wife, and Sister Mary
Whitman,
were again received into the Church by letter from Hillsborough
Church,
and on the first Saturday in March, 1827, the two Low's and
Sister
Mary Whitman were all granted letters of dismission
from the
Church,
and they are mentioned no more. I
wonder if these Low's
were
relation to the Whitman's - since she joined the church at the
same time they did, and was granted a
dismissal at the same time, I
just
wondered perhaps, if they were connected someway. I have failed
yet
to find anyone around here, who knows where the
was
- but evidently it was somewhere in Crawford, Harrison or
Counties,
as that church was mentioned two or three times in the minutes,
as
being a part of the Association to which the
John
Whitman did not join the church until the first Saturday in June,
1.847
and James Whitman and Elisa Whitman, his wife (who was a son of
John
and Anna) joined the church on Sunday in June, 1856.
The
membership roll in the back of the minute book contained the
name
of each member from the organization in June 1818 to October 1858,
when
the minute book ended- and the second minute book is unavailable
as
yet to the minister of the church, as an individual member has the
book
and will not turn it over, but 1 understand that there is going
to
be a lawsuit over regaining possession, if she does not relinquish
it
soon. Apparently it contains some undesirable information about
some
of this person's family, and she does not wish other people to
learn
of this.
Your
Jeremiah Poe and Polly Totton are the first two
members
listed
in the membership roll, after the names of the ones who constituted
the
church. There were about two hundred
names listed in the membership
roll,
and I will list all of the Poe's, Tottons and Whitmans which were
there:

I'm
sure this information will not open any channels toward
finding
any missing ancestors, however, I did think it was interesting
to
find out that some of our early ancestors were members of the Old
Unity
Regular Baptist Faith, and that they took an early part in the
organization
of our country- I thought perhaps you too, will enjoy
adding
these bits to your records.
Yours
truly,
Clara Marie Burns
P.S. After checking the list of sur-names of your ancestors, I rechecked the lists for Doans - Crecelius - Neal, etc and
found none, except one

Dear
Donald:
I will try and answer your letter. I am one of Corda¿s
girls, Beatrice. Mother is not to well
now. She has been having some heart
trouble this fall. She is up about all
the time and does some work, mostly the cooking and dish washing.
You ask about Uncle Russell and
Melvin. Uncle Russell is in
You ask about the graves. They are at Union Chapel and they are
unmarked. Mother and us girls have kept
them up and we mowed them off. They are
William Poe and his first wife Eliza Ann Crecelius
Poe and his second wife Susan Elizabeth Harris Poe and another one which Mother
thinks is one of the children.
We don¿t know
much about the older Poes. The first children were Jerry, Henry, Elige and Elisha Poe and the
second were Mary Elizabeth Totten, Eliza Ann Jones,
Ruth Randon, Linda Mills, Lucinda Katheryn
Dunn, Adam and George Poe. When Uncle
Adam was here he could talk about the older ones but I have thought so many
times why I didn¿t set down lot of things he told us
but it¿s too late now for he died in a short time
after he went home. He might have lived

We haven¿t got
but one picture and it is Great Grandmother Dunn / Great Grandmother Dunn
together. We have it framed. (Note: I believe she meant Dunn / Baylor. At any rate I made a copy of this photograph.

I sure do wish you good luck and hope you
can find some one who can tell you what you want to know. I would love to read your book after you get
it done. I am sorry that we couldn¿t help you any and I am also sorry I didn¿t ask Uncle Adam a lot about the family but I didn¿t think so much about it then. He was such a nice old man (84) and we
enjoyed having him so much.
Was glad to here from you and if you are
ever here we can take you to the graves.
Will be more than glad to.
As ever

for Jacob "Jake" Poe
The listing of The Union Chapel Cemetery,
Crawford Co. IN as Jacob Poe's burial
site is based upon statements made by Corda and Beatrice
Baylor. They stated that Jacob Poe was
also buried in an unmarked grave a short distance away from where his brother
William is buried. My recollection is
hazy, but I seem to remember that they showed me a slightly sunken area some
ten feet or so east of William's grave site, which was at the base of a large
fir tree, where they believed that Jacob was buried. I don't remember whether we discussed the
possibility of his second wife being buried near by. I also do not remember whether we discussed
why Jacob was buried In the Union Chapel Cemetery instead of in the

Notes
for
Indiana Boston Poe is thought to be the daulghter of Benjamin Boston and Sarah Looney. There is no proof at this time but
researchers believe this to be quite likely for there is a female child of
unknown name of her age found in Benjamin Boston's census records.

Poe was born 1 November 1827 in
Ira at the age of 18 years volunteered to
serve in the Mexican American war. Of
the 100 boys in his regiment that the doctors examined, they pronounced him the
best, most perfect, build of them all.
He was of German and English extraction, 5 foot 10 inches tall and
weighed 180 pounds. He had blue gray
eyes and black curly hair.
After the war, he returned home, well and
sound and married Catherine Britton.
They had seven children, three dying in infancy. Three boys and a girl lived to maturity. Ira volunteered for the civil war, lost his
wife Catherine, during this war. When he
returned he married a second time but she only lived about eighteen
months. Around two years later he met
