Allen, Roberta Ethridge. God With Us: A history
of the Immanuel Baptist Church. Little Rock, Arkansas 1892 - 1967. Balfour
Printing, Co. Little Rock, Arkansas 1867.
page 194-196 (excerpted) [my
notes are in brackets and are green]
Another well-known family at Immanuel which came into the
church soon after the "turn of the century" are members of the Corley
family. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Corley [Michael Lee
Corley and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Davis - daughter of Franklin Pierce
Davis and Nancy Adaline Hogue] came to Immanuel when the first
church was built in 1895. Thomas Coy Corley joined in 1906, and is still at
Immanuel with his brothers, Frank (who joined on March 10, 1908), and M. L.
Jr., who joined in March 1922. Vernard F. Corley was also formerly in the
church.
This is another of Immanuel's families that became a bit
complicated to trace. Mrs. Chester A. Puller [Pearl
Davis, sister of "Lizzie" Davis] of Immanuel and Mrs. M.
L. Corley, Sr. were sisters. [she was also sister
of Margaret Emily "Maggie" Davis, wife of Samuel Arthur Poe].
Mrs. Puller became a member in October, 1909. She now makes her home with her
daughter whose family is also at Immanuel. They are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barnes,
Nancy, and a young son not yet a member of Immanuel.
Mrs. Thomas J. Gulley ["Donnie"
Holiman, daughter of William Harvey Holiman, brother of Sarah Elizabeth
Holiman, wife of William Elkin Poe. These Holiman brothers and sisters were the
children of Joshua Holiman and Lucretia Ann Hogue - relative of Nancy Adaline
Hogue] has grown up in Immanuel with her cousin, Mrs. Coy Reed. Mrs.
Reed in the daughter of Dr. J. E. T. Holiman, physician who died in 1918. [Brother of Sarah Elizabeth Holiman] Dr. Holiman
and his wife had been received into Immanuel on December 15, 1907. The previous
September, Mrs. Gulley's parents, "Brother and Sister W. H. Holiman",
had joined the church
Dr. Holiman served as deacon, and W. H. Holiman became a
deacon in later years. Miss Fay Holiman, Mrs. Reed's sister, was formerly at
Immanuel, but now teaches at Ouachita University.
W. H. Holiman served on the Building Committee for the
church completed in 1929. He has been paid the tribute by friends as having
been an humble person, "with good common sense, and always on the right
side."
Some of Immanuel's most faithful members are children and grandchildren
of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Poe [William Elkin Poe]
who joined in 1907. J. M. Poe [Joseph Manley Poe]
was Mr. Poe's brother, [half brother. J. M. Poe was
the son of William Threet Poe and Miriam Rosty Reynolds. William Elkin Poe was
the son of William Threet Poe and Rosty's sister, Sarah. J. M. Poe's son,
Joseph Allen Poe, compiled much research on the Poe family. This research was
passed to me by his widow, Helen Pearce] and
S. A. Poe his son [Samuel Arthur Poe].
Mrs. S. A. Poe [Margaret Emily "Maggie"
Davis] now resides with her son and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. E.
Poe [William Eugene Poe and Flora Annabelle Halley]
and Wm. Arthur [this researcher], all
Immanuel members. W. E. Poe's daughters, active members, are Mrs. Harry
Broening, Sr. [Mellie Elizabeth Poe],
and Mrs. W. C. Kramp [William C. Kramp and Beulah
Myrtle Poe] who joined in March, 1908.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Broening, Jr. are also in the church. Mr.
Broening's sister, Mrs. Bill McKelvey (Martha), is once more in the choir with
him and his wife while her husband is in Saigon. Mrs. Kramp's daughter, Mrs.
Jim Young (Elizabeth), is in the church but her brother, Wm. C. Kramp
("Bill"), now lives in Dallas.
