This comes from the Revolutionary War Pension papers of Anthony. He entered the Revolutionary War in March of 1781 in Randolph Co., NC and applied for his pension on February 5, 1834 at the age of 77. In his father's Bible, which he had in his possession, it showed that he was born in 1757. Poe: Nancy Poe was born in North Carolina on 5-22-1822. She was the daughter of John W. Poe and Elisabeth. Her Father moved with his family to Morgan County Indiana when Nancy was about 15 years old(1837). Nancy married Aaron Rains in 1845, in Indiana. So many people were wanting to move west at this time that Aaron and Nancy moved to Pettis County Missouri. They were dissatisfied with the country, and with their four little daughters started back to Indiana. Aaron was stricken with a fever and died with congestive chills, between 1854, and 1856. He was buried in Vandalia, Illinois. Nancy stayed there for about one year, then she and her four girls made their way back to Indiana. Some time later she met Henry Miller. He was a widower who had already raised a large family. He and Nancy were married about 1858 or1859. To this union two sons were born, and about the same time John Phillip Miller, Henry's eldest son, was married to Rebecca Jane Rains, who was the eldest daughter of Nancy and Aaron Rains. Carried peach twigs stuck in potatoes to keep them moist and alive on the trip from North Carolina to Indiana. He also brought apple, magnolia and other shrubs in a similar manner. Had peach apple and pear orchards in southern Indiana after the Civil War. Planted young apple trees in rows between peach trees. He hired teams and wagons to haul ripe peaches to Lebanon IN where he could get $3.00 a bushel after the Civil War. (This was considered a very good price). They would take three wagon loads at a time and the trip took nearly a week. They drove at night and his son Cana would sell the peaches during the day. Possibly came from Germany, his children spoke only German in early childhood. He was know to have a (low boiling point) a hot temper. He had 15 children, but the writer cannot account for all of them. Possibly some died in early childhood or infancy.
