That would just about put Harris George in NC at the same time as my William George. I need to re-load my data base to see if Harris is a sibling. The part about my William being in NC is a bit shaky but makes sense because of who he married. Then he went to SC, turned west and his sons went through State courthouses as elected representatives in MS and AL, on their way to Louisiana. -----Original Message----- From: William Poe home contact Sent: Wednesday, October 27, 2004 1:03 PM To: Herndon, Jill Subject: Poe - Straughn - George By the way, we spoke about the Poe - George conections didn't we? see http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2389360&id=I513303059 as I figure it, Lucy Poe, daughter of Simon Poe SR married Richard Straughn (Straughan) and their daughter, Mary Straughn, married Harris George whose will follows: From a George Family researcher, Jane Becker of Portage, Wisconsin. ... according to this will it was probably Harris George that was married to Mary Straughn. They had children Emsley, Pressley, Allen, Mary Lucy (or Mary and Lucy?), John William (or John and William) and another child not yet born at the time. Emsley was the eldest. In his household are 1 boy 10 but under 15 1 girl 15 but under 20 1 man 60 but under 70 1 woman 50 but under 60. There is also an Emsley George in NC in 1810. The Bureau of Land Management issued patents to Emsley George for land in Madison and Delaware Counties (Indiana) 8/1/1837. In 1840, Eli and Sarah (George) Kersey were living a couple of counties away in Henry County. 1840 Federal Cenus for Henry County, Indiana shows Eli and family in Franklin Township. Also William Kersey (probably Eli's father). Also, Verling Kersey (probably Eli's brother), and an Enoch George. None of them appear in the 1830 Henry County Census. I sent for a copy of Robert Butler Kersey's (son of Eli & Sarah, & my gg-grandfather) Civil War pension file. In it, his sanity is being questioned. Friends of Robert and his wife (who also knew the family when they lived in Porter County, Indiana) state that insanity runs in the George family, and that his mother (Sarah) was insane and that two of her brothers were also insane. Elsewhere in the file it says that Sarah wandered out of the house one December night and was found dead the next morning in the orchard. I never got around to putting the approximate date in my files and the pension file is at work right now so can't give you the date. I think it was the late 1860's when Sarah died. Eli & Sarah's daughter Maria also had some mental problems and spent time in asylums in Indianapolis and at Long Cliff (Cass County Indiana) where she hanged herself on June 9, 1894.
