Poe Family in Pennsylvania

This set of details provides an idea about what a vast area Pennsylvania’s counties encompassed during the Colonial period. Bucks, Chester and Philadelphia are the first three formed. Lancaster appears in 1729, then York is made of the western part of York in 1749. Cumberland is formed in 1750. The next division of interest to Poe genealogy is in 1784 when Franklin is formed.

Beaver County

Children of George Jacob POE in Pennsylvania

Although George Jacob POE was granted land in Prince George's County Maryland all five (?) of his children had made it to Pennsylvania by the end of the eighteenth century. After George Jacob Poe was murdered in 1862, his oldest son George received most of his property though right of Primature. George Poe married Catherine Williard in about 1772. George Jr.. Elixabeth, and Catherine were George's and Catherine's three children. George POE was probably a Tory He survived the Revolution in Frederick County Maryland though several Tories of the county were hanged.

General George POE who fought in the Revolution was born in Ireland and was from the Baltimore area. Two of Catherine Williard's brothers fought under General George POE. General George POE married Catherine PORTER from Frederick county. It is easy to confuse the Tory son of George Jacob POE with the Revolutionary war general.

Sophronia Poe had married Matthias SHANOR in Cumberland County. Pennsylvania in 1756. (It is disputed that Sophronia was George Jacob Poe's daughter). Andrew POE went west to Fort Pitt soon after his father was murdered. Before leaving, he apprenticed his brother Adam to a shoemaker. Catherine, (Kate) POE married Isaac MILLER in Frederick county Maryland before June 29, 1763.

In 1763, Andrew acquired some land near Harmon's creek in what is now Washington County, PA. His younger broth Adam joined him later in 1772 or 1774. Andrew, known as Captain Poe, built a blockhouse on his land and all settlers would take their families to it when danger threatened. The blockhouse was still standing in 1923 according to relatives at a Poe reunion in Georgetown, PA.

Andrew POE and Adam POE were Indian fighters and Revolutionary War soldiers.

Andrew POE had married Elizabeth RUTAN at Williamsport, Lycoming County. PA on January 15, 1780. Andrew POE had Poe Wood surveyed on February 15, 1786. It contained 333 acres in Washington County Pennsylvania. Andrew POE later moved to Beaver County Pennsylvania. He died of dropsy at his home in Green C\township, Beaver county, in July of 1823.

In 1775 Andrew and Adam moved from Fort Pitt to Westmoreland County. Pennsylvania, They lived with the John Crist family curing the Revolution. On October 12, 1777, Adam POE married Elizabeth MATTHEWS COCHRAN. On June 24. 1780 Adam POE homesteaded a 378 acre tract on Harmon's creek. Westmoreland county Pennsylvania. He called this tract "Poeville". Poeville was patented on March 14, 1788. In 1793 Adam POE moved from Poeville to a place near the mouth of the Little Beaver. This was part of Washington County that had been Allegheny County and would become Beaver County Pennsylvania. In 1801 Adam returned to Poeville from Little Beaver. In 1803 Adam moved his family to Columbiana County Ohio. Adam and Elizabeth POE moved to Wayne County, Ohio in 1813,. Adam Poe died in Massillon. Ohio in July of 1840. Adam's wife Elisabeth died at the home of their son, Andrew, four years later.

There has been speculation that Andrew POE. Adam POE and Kate POE MILLER visited Sophronia POE SHANOR when they passed through Bedford County Pennsylvania. In Monocacy & Cactoctin Professor C.E. Shilknecht stated that Sophronia was their sister. Sophronia POE SHANOR died in Chipewa township, Beaver CO PA in about 1804. Matthias SHANOR died in Beaver, County, PA on February 10, 1828.

Kate POE MILLER and her husband Isaac MILLER took up land in Smith Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1786. This land was adjacent to Adam Poe's "Poe-town". Isaac MILLER was listed on the 1790 Washington County census with one male over 16, one male under 16 and two females. About 1809 Isaac and Kate MILLER left Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio. Both are buried in Mahoning County Ohio.

Dawalt WILLIARD was Catherine WILLIARD POE's father. When Dawalt WILLIARD made out his will on November 6, 1782 he left money to his grandchildren, George POE, Elizabeth POE and Catherine POE. No mention was made of his daughter, Catherine WILLIARD POE. She apparently died before 1781. I believe George POE married Elizabeth MATEER in about 1782. Andrew POE was born to George and Elizabeth POE on January 4, 1783. Dolly POE Was born to George and Elizabeth POE in about 1788,

George POE sold the last of the land he had inherited in 1790 and moved his family to Fayette County Pennsylvania. George and his family lived in Fayette County Pennsylvania for the next 20 years, George POE and George POE Jr. moved their families to Montgomery County Ohio in 1810. One George POE died in 1811 and the other died in 1818

Abigail Poe, born 4/16/1760, was the 4th child of Edward and Martha Brittain Poe. Her maternal grandparents were John and Elizatbeth Stilwell Brittain of Shewsbury, Monmouth, Co., New Jersey. John Brittain was born 1695 - died 1705. Her paternal grandparents were Patrick and Abigail Day Poe of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Abigail Day was the daughter of Christopher Day.

On August 1, 1776 Abigail Poe married John Day, son of Mathew Day, who was the son of Christopher Day. This of course, is where our Poe and Day lines cross. Abigail Poe was the great grand daughter of Christopher Day. John Day was the grandson Christopher Day. So Abigail Poe and John Day were 1st cousins, once removed.

Abigail Poe's father, Edward Poe, had served bravely during the Revolution. After living in Maryland for some time, he moved to Bracken County, Kentucky. John Day had also lived in Maryland and moved to Clermont County, Ohio about 1802. I have no record of where John Day married Abigail Poe, but is was in Maryland, undoubtedly, as it is thought that Mathew Day, John's father, after living in Fawn Twp., Shewsbury, York County, Pennsylvania, either moved over into Maryland and died there or that portion of York County, Pennsylvania became Baltimore County, Maryland. The two families, no doubt were well acquainted, and in those early times it was not at all usual for cousins to marry cousins.

By Catherine, Edward Poe had two known children, viz: Martha Poe and Samuel Poe, mentioned in his will.

Samuel Poe (10/16/1786 - 2/3/1865 married (1) Mary "Polly" Hook (3/27/1785 - 6/9/1846) They married 3/7/1807 (Recorded in Bracken County, Kentucky). Samuel was born in Baltimore County, Maryland and came to Kentucky with his parents at 10 years of age. Mary’s parents were John and Hannah Hook of Bracken Co., KY. Samuel Poe was executor of Isaac Day, Sr’s. estate in 1831. there were six children born to Samuel Poe and his 1^st wife, Mary Hook Poe, viz: Richard, Morris, John H., Thomas W., Samuel J., Frances and William W.

p. 90. Sometime previous to 1752, Thomas Penn wrote to Dr. Graeme and Richard Peters to lay out ground at the Forks of Delaware for a town. The town plat was surveyed by Nicholas Scull, assisted by William Parsons, in the spring of 1752, the ground being then covered with trees and bushes. Mr. Parsons left Philadelphia May 7th, in company with Mr. Scull, and proceeding by way of Abington, the Crooked Billet, Alexander Poe's and Durham, crossed the west brand at the Forks.

At the sessions of the court held June 11, 1752, George Hughes, of Buckingham, presented his petition for license to keep a house of entertainment where he lived at the junction of the York and Durham roads and his petition was "allowed." This was the first tavern in Buckingham, and stood where the farmhouse on the Hughesian farm now stands. At that time the nearest taverns were Canby's, at the Ferry, now New Hope, on the east; Joseph Smith's, at Wrightstown, on the northwest, and Patrick Poe's "Sign of the Plough" on the North.

Ramsey and Loyd Family

The following record is presented because there are close associations with the Poe and Loyd (Lloyd) families. Some say that Frances Browning who administered the estate of Samuel Poe of Essex County, Virginia in 1725 was married to a Lloyd. There are several other Poe-Lloyd marriages. Ramsey and Poe connect as far back as the daughter of Dr. Leonard Poe, Frances, who married David Ramsey, probably in the latter half of the 16th century (1570 or so). Ramsey and Poe also have close relationships in North Carolina in the 18th Century. There are many other references in these Bucks County, PA records to Ramsey and Lloyd. That the names of Ramsey, Lloyd and Poe appear in this county as well as Essex County, VA and Chatham County, NC certainly indicates a common migration pattern for the three families.

p. 543 Mortgage Patrick Poe of Plumstead, taylor, and his wife Abigail, to secure a debt of pounds 150, to Patrick Baird of Philadelphia, gent., a plantation and 200 acres of land in Plumstead and bounded by the lands of Alexander Brown, Thomas Brown, Ephraim Fenton and Francis Hughes. Said land part of 1,250 acres which William Penn granted to William Kent by indenture of release dated 18 Oct 1681. William Kent sold it to Walter Hill by indenture of release dated 11 Sep 1685 who by indenture of release dated 29 Sep 1685 granted it to Thomas Millner who sold it to John Davis by indenture of release dated 8 Apr 1721.

John Davis then died, having written a Last Will and Testament dated 7 Dec 1720, bequeathing to his daughters pounds 500 each and the residue to his wife Mary (but if she should remarry, she should have pounds 100 and the remainder divided equally among the daughters.) Mary Davis, on of John Davis' daughters, by indenture of release dated 13 Sep 1726, granted one equal one-third part of the 1,250 acres to her mother Mary Davis who along with the other two daughters, Elizabeth Davis and Ann Davis, by indenture of release dated 17 Sep 1726, granted the whole 1,250 acres to Ebenezor Large. Elizabeth Davis and Ann Davis (who married Awbery Devan) both released their share of the land to Ebenezer Large, by indentures of release 26 May 1733 and 20 Nov 1733 respectively.

Ebenezer Large and his wife Dorothy conveyed 200 acres of the 1,250 acre tract to Richard Lundy, Jr and his wife Elizabeth by indentures of lease and release dated 1 and 2 Nov 1734. By indentures of lease and release dated 26 and 27 May 1735 the Lundy's sold the 200 acres to Francis Borden who then sold it to John Rich by deed dated 12 Mar 1741. John Rich and his wife Sarah, by dded dated 22 Feb this instant conveyed the 200 acres to Patrick Poe. To be repaid on or by 24 Feb 1749/50. Made 24 Feb 1748/9. Wit: Gariod Cunningham, John Rich. Ackn: 13 May 1749. JP: Lawrence Growdon. rec: 18 May 1749.

Springfield Township

The first record of Springfield as a township is in 1686, when Peter Lester was appointed constable. In the south, 850 acres had been surveyed in 1681 to Henry Maddock and James Kennerly. Henry Maddock represented Chester county in the General Assembly in 1684, but subsequently returned to England, the tract mentioned becoming the property of his son, Mordecai, and included the present grounds of Swarthmore College. Other early land owners were:

Although, the 1770 will of Thomas Poe in Chester County, PA mentions "Thomas Poe of Antrim” this appears confusing to me. There is an Antrim in Ulster, Ireland, and there is an Antrim township in Franklin County, PA where two Poe families lived in the late 1700s, one stated to be Irish (Thomas Poe and wife Mary Potter) and a German Lutheran probably from Germany (Jacob Poe and wife Mary Stoey).

John Gibson, son of Andrew and Elizabeth Carnes Gibson

, was born 1754 in Antrim Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. John Gibson was

enrolled in the eighth Battalion, third Company, as a Private third class, Cumberland

County Militia in which capacity he performed a tour of active duty under a call

dated October 1777. He served in two companies, Captain James Poe's company, July

1777, and in Captain McCoy's Company, January 1778. He also served in the war of

was also a witness to the Will of John's Father, Andrew. John is listed in the 1786

Taxables list for Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Antrim Twp. also his military officer

James Poe is also listed.

John Gibson married 1733 in Chambersburg, Franklyn County, Pennsylvania, Martha

Parks, daughter of John Parks of Warrington Township, York County, PA. They settled

on a farm given them by Johns father. They raised a large family of ten children.

In about 1790 to 1792 A new settlement by members of the Associate, or Seceder Church

had been made in Tennessee near Nashville. John Gibson with all his children, along

with James Hogg and all his children moved to Blount County, Tennessee. John and

his sons Thomas and James had fine farms adjoining each others. There was fine timber,

water and soil. They raised indigo and cotton.

John Gibson and some of his sons, moved to Green County, Ohio about 1804. He and

his wife lived in Preble County. A Seceder church had been erected at Massies Creek.

About 1825, John and Martha came from Preble County and lived with their son Thomas

near Xenia until their death. Martha died 13 May 1830 and John died 15 May 1828,

age 74 Est. They were buried in Massies Creek Cemetery and a large, old style sand

stone marked their graves.

James Poe was absent from school by virtue of the fact he played hookey. Mrs. Betty

Hopkins observed James climb a tree to watch a local farmer mow hay. Returning home

at the regular hour, he was asked where he had been. He replied he had been in school.

For that little lie, his father gave him a licking.

When the Revolutionary War began, James Poe enlisted in John Allison's Battalion

and served as a Lieutenant. He was later promoted to the rank of Captain. This illustrious

son of a pioneer family was a man of importance, not only in the community in which

he lived, but in the affairs of the county and state. He served on the first grand

jury in Franklin County. He also served on the first Board of County Commissioners

from 1784 to 1787 and later from 1790 to 1793. Captain Poe was a member of the House

of Representatives for two terms as well as representing this area in the State

Senate for two terms. Poe married Elizabeth, daughter of Captain James Potter. Potter,

with a small detail of men, tried to overtake the Indians after their cowardly act

became known.

Potter and Poe are the two men previously mentioned relative to a planned memorial

at the Brown's Mill Cemetery. *

*In spite of all the discouragements, all went well; the bills were paid and a small

balance remained in the treasury. Within a few years, the Enoch Brown Park Commission

sponsored and contributed $250 each to erect the memorials at Forts McCord, Loudon,

Steel, and McDowell. Their endeavor to erect monuments in the old Brown's Mill Cemetery

to honor General James Potter and Major James Poe as well as at the Renfrew Farm,

near Waynesboro, did not materialize because of the lack of interest and effort

on the part of the people of those areas.

Chapter History

Thomas Poe, ancestor of Mrs. Maxine Dodd, emigrated first to New Castle on the Delaware. He removed to Concocheaque Valley in 1741, and to Antrim Twp., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1746. It was here in Pennsylvania that he obtained a land warrant on October 9, 1750, for 568 acres and 40 perches. His land began on the Concocoheaque on the North and extended along the Guilford Township line to the East. Sometime prior to 1756, he built his home, similar to those common among the gentry of Ulster, Ireland. He was a man of prominence in Antrim, where he held a number of local offices and was serving as constable at the time of his death in 1770. He married Mary Potter. To this union were born four children - one son and three daughters.

     The second session of the county court convened Thursday, December 2, 1784, in the second story of JOHN JACK's stone tavern, which stood where MILLER's drug store now is.  This building was burnt in 1864.  The judges present were WILLIAM McDOWELL, of Peters; HUMPHREY FULLERTON, of Antrim; JAMES FINLEY, of Letterkenny.  CRAWFORD was clerk.  TALBOT was

sheriff.  The grand jurors were JAMES POE, HENRY PAWLING, WILLIAM  ALLISON, WILLIAM McDOWELL, ROBERT WILKINS, JOHN McCONNELL, JOHN McCARNEY, JOHN RAY, JOHN JACK, JR., JOHN DICKSON, D. McCLINTOCK, JOSEPH CHAMBERS and JOSEPH LONG.

In 1814, in obedience to orders from Government, GOVERNOR SNYDER

ordered a draft upon the State for troops. Franklin, Cumberland, York

and Adams Counties' quota under the call was 1,000 men, the men from

this county to assemble in Loudon on the 1st of March. CAPTAIN SAMUEL

DUNN, of Path Valley, had a company of forty men. These at once volun-

teered. The balance of the county's quota was 175 men. CAPTAIN SAMUEL

GORDON's full company from Washington, and CAPTAIN STAKE's partial

company from Lurgan, rendezvoused at Loudon. WILLIAM McCLELLAN in com-

mand, who took them to Erie, leaving Loudon March 4. MAJOR McCLELLAN's

official report says the command, 221 privates, was officered by one

major, three captains, five lieutenants and two ensigns. At Erie, they

were put in the Fifth Regiment, commanded by COLONEL JAMES FELTON;

JAMES WOOD, of Greencastle, was major; THOMAS POE, of Antrim, adjutant.

The latter was a brave and gallant soldier. He was a man born to com-

mand. It is told of him that by the mere power of his presence he

quelled an outbreak of his men in camp, and by a word forced them to go

quietly to their quarters. He fell mortally wounded at the battle of

Chippewa, July 6, 1814.

This Information was provided by Dr. Harry Poe, a collateral relative of Edgar Allan

Poe.

ALEXANDER POE (17 -1787) son of Sarah and David Poe, was of Dring, Parish of Kildallon,

County of Cavan, Ireland. He emigrated to America prior to 1739 and before the death

of his father in 1742 and was an early settler on the Manor of Masque in what is

now Adam County, Pennsylvania, his claim for his land dating back to April 1739.

Under his father's will, he was to receive 5 pounds sterling if he returned to Ireland

within six years, but he remained on his Pennsylvania farm until his death, about

1787. His will was proved in York County, Pennsylvania on March 24, 1788, and that

of his wife, Margaret, on January 28, 1789. After the death of Alexander's father

David in 1749, his brother John came over from Ireland to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

It is probable that he spent some time on his brother Alexander's farm in the Manor

of Masque. John later moved to Maryland.

Alexander Poe married Margaret, and they had issue, namely:

Margaret Poe (17 - 18 ) married Thomas Ormond

In compiling this genealogy, Harry T. Poe, Jr. speculated about what might have

become of Alexander's son, John Poe:

What became of Alexander's son John Poe has not been ascertained. He may have been

Sergeant John Poe of Captain James Young's Company of Baltimore County Maryland

who enlisted July 7, 1776. This John was born in 1754, stood five feet eight inches

tall, and had black eyes. This John Poe may very well have had descendants, possibly

in Virginia.

Besides this line of the family, Harry T. Poe, Jr. also spent many years delving

into possible relationships between this family of Poes and other families with

the same name but no known connection. On March 23, 1930 he wrote to George Van

Emon Poe of Van Buren, Ohio to inquire about George Jacob Poe who was born in 1809.

He had known for some time about the family of Poes who lived in Findlay, Ohio and

were buried in the Indian Green Cemetery. George Poe never replied to the letter,

but it was saved by the family, and his grand-daughter Marilyn Schaaf sent it along

with her family records to us during the planning of the 1999 Poe Family Reunion.

This family's earliest recorded member is Jacob Poe, but family tradition claims

descent from a John Poe. The Ohio Poes have conjectured that their John Poe was

the brother of Alexander, but possibly he was this son of Alexander.

MARY POE (17 - 18 ) daughter of Margaret and Alexander Poe (17 - 1787) was born

on the Manor of Masque in what is now Adam County, Pennsylvania. She first married

David Peden. After his death, she was married in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Archibald

Findley. Around 1800 they moved to Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Possibly they moved

to what is now Findley, Ohio with some of her Poe relatives., as some of the Poe

family lived there. Jacob Poe who died 28 May 1856 is buried beside his wife Nancy

in Indian Green Cemetery, ten miles west of Findley in Hancock County, Ohio. Mary

Poe Peden Findley and her husband Archibald Findley had children, though only one

name is known. A son Alexander married Catherine Deemer.
