FOUSHEE
- I have back to a 5g-grandfather, John Foushee, b. ?, d. 1779 in
Culpeper
Co. He married Apphia ? (her maiden surname may be THORNTON, but I
haven't
found a proof yet) I have a copy fo John Foushee's will and it was
proved in probate on 21 Jun 1779 (it
was written in 1777). He listed his
children
as
John
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
Benjamin
(b. ?, d. ?, m. possibly a Susannah BOURNE?),
Thornton
(b. ?, d. ?, m. Rosa HOBBS in 1774),
George
(my ancestor - b. 16 Jun 1756 in Orange Co., d. 13 Aug 1833, m.
_____?
FIELD)
Charles
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
Joseph
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
William
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
Elijah
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
Daniel
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
Nancy
(b. ?, d. ?, m. John TUREMAN),
Jemimah
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
Hannah
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?),
Elisabeth
(b. ?, d. ?, m. ?).
George
served in the military:
Pension
of George Foushee: Declaration - On 19th September, 1832, before
Thomas
Hill, Justice of the Peace, appeared George Foushee,
of the County of
Culpeper,
Virginia, aged 76, who made the following declaration. He entered
service
of the United States under the following named officers. Born 16th
June, 1756, in Orange County, Virginia. First went into service in October,
1776,
under Captain James Thomas and Colonel Alcock and
____ John Sleet.
That
he marched to Hunter's Forge near Falmouth when that place was
threatened
by the enemy, they being at the river below. After the enemy
disappeared,
the Regiment was discharged and returned home in two months.
He
was not again in service until 1781, because he and another in 1777
furnished
a three year soldier, and were exempt, and later he
served as a
substitute
for his brother John Foushee.
Discharged
after surrender of Cornwallis and went home with two sick
brothers. Battles engaged in:
Petersburg and Siege of Yorktown.
Residence
of soldier at enlistment, Culpeper County, Virginia.
Date
of application for pension, September 19th, 1832...soldier died August
13th,
1833.
Dates
George Foushee, Private. Enlisted October 1776, Col. Alcock, Capt,
James
Thomas, one month. Served April 1781 two
months, twenty days, Capt.
John
Waugh, Col. James Slaughter. Served
August 1781 two and one half
months,
Capt. Lewis Yancey, Col. James Slaughter.
I
have been told that John's father was also John Foushee
and the elder John
married
a native american woman named "Meel'In" or "Meelin"
and they
reference
a will book for Richmond Co., Va. The same person that sent me the
info
on John and Meel'ln advises that John's father is James Foushee, who
was
born in France in 1666. No proof or documents on this, though. Instead
of
George Foushee marrying ? FIELD,
they have him marrying Esther ALLEN.
Someone
contacted me with this info on John the elder (on behalf of someone
they
were assisting with research): "...She is trying to prove descent
through
Elizabeth Spoe, John Foushee's
first wife. His second wife was
Meelin Downman. John died 1733...."
I
have also been told that the first John Foushee was
known as Jean Fauché.
I
have found a bit of census data:
