St. Mary's Parish at Library of Virginia

St. Mary's Parish was formed from Sittenburne Parish in Old Rappahannock County around 1677. By 1713 it covered a portion of Essex County. St. Mary's Parish at first extended on both sides of the Rappahannock River until its northern half, in Richmond County, was organized as Hanover Parish in 1713. The remaining portion of the parish was entirely in Caroline County when that county was formed in 1728.

St. Margaret's Church (Caroline County, Va.)

This church, also known as Bull Church, was established in 1745, and located a few miles west of Penola in western Caroline County. The church belonged to St. Margaret's Parish, which was formed in 1720, and originally part of both King William County and Caroline County. The parish was divided in 1744, and the part in Prince William County became part of St. David's Parish.
