This indenture made this 20th day of 8ber (October) in the year 1724 Between William Davison of Spotsilvania County of one part & Francis Browning of St. Marys Parish in Essex County Witnesseth that for sum of Five pounds Sterl money and twelve hundred pounds of Tobacco to him paid. Hath granted unto Francis Browning his heir and assigns Fifty acres of land in Essex County & lyeing on the East side of Puemansend Swamp being part of a Divident of Land formerly granted to Jno. Meadows and Henry Peeters and bounded as followeth beginning at the mouth of a branch called Francis Browning Branch at the main run side of the South Fork of Puemansend Corner to the Iron Mine Land and running Easterly up the said Branch its several courses to three marked white oaks standing in Matthew Collins old division line. Thence Southerly along the said devision line to a branch called the Peace mouth of the first mentioned Branch to the place where it first began all which premises now are in the actual possession of him the said Francis Browning by Virtue of the Statue of Transferring uses into possession.

This indenture made this 20th day of October 1724 between William Bryant* of King & Queen County of one part and Francis Browning of Saint Marys Parish in Essex County Witnesseth that the said William Bryant for sum of Fourteen hundred pounds of Tobo. doth grant unto said Francis Browning & his heirs and assigns fifty acres of land in Essex County being part of a Dididnt of land formerly granted to John Meadows and Henry Peeters & bounded Beginning at a corner red oak & hickory of Samuel Poe's  land & running thence South to a corner gum on the North side of the South Fork of Peumansend Swamp thence down the Swamp its several courses brought straight North to three gums corner to Samuel Poe's land at ye mouth of a branch thence up the branch North joyning to land of Samuel Poe to the Beginning all which said premises now are in the actual possession of him the said Francis Browning by Virtue of Statute for Transferring uses into possession . . .

[From Colonial Caroline by T.E. Campbell 1954. page 400. … the people of Colonial Caroline were little concerned with criminal warrants. Instead they rebuked or fought people who offended them. Rebukes and fights led to scores of civil actions for slander and assault and battery. These suits clogged the docket of the Caroline court with suits for assault and battery by far the more prevalent (long list follows that includes the entry below of 10 Sept. 1736)]

Ordered that all the Gangs below the Battle Run that formerly were under the Directions of Samuel Scott and Francis Browning work under John Gouge Jun. who is appointed Overseer of the Highway from Poes Spring to the Lower End of Brownings Precinct and that they attend and obey the said Overseers Directions in clearing and keeping the said way in Repair and that he cause the Posts of Directions to be set up where Necessary.

This indenture made this 16th day of August in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred & Eighty four Between Jane Mitchell of County of Culpeper & State of Virginia of one part and Benjamin Douglas of County & State aforesaid of other part Witnesseth that for sum of One hundred & fifty pounds current money of Virginia to her paid by these presents do bargain & sell unto Benjamin Douglass his heirs one certain tract of land lying in County & State aforesaid containing by Estimation One hundred & forty five acres be the same more or less it being the whole tract of land on which Cornelius Mitchell deced lately lived on the head Branches of Battle Run part of which the said Mitchell purchased of Robert Gouge and conveyed to said Mitchell by Deeds bearing date the 19th day of July in year of our Lord 1764 beginning at two white Oaks and a Gum. Corner to a Patent grant to Wm. Watson & Wm. Poe bearing date the tenth day of June 1737, thence North seventy one degrees East One hundred & seventy two poles to a white Oak & red Oak. North twenty eight degrees Ninety eight poles to three Spanish Oaks South seventy one West seventy four poles to two Spanish Oaks and white Oak. Corner to Thomas Minor. North thirty six West One hundred & fifty pole to 3 black Oaks. South ten West eighty six poles to a small black Oak in the second line of said Poe and Watson, thence South nineteen East to the beginning. William Gouge b abt 1768 married Milley Poe b 1780 in Wilkes Co. NC 1 Aug 1797, lived in Rhea and Campbell, TN for awhile and then came to Cole Co MO abt 1815/1816 with 4 sons.  He died abt 1830 according to census records.  His children were:
        1.  James b 1800 (50-1850) TN   m. Malinda King 9 Aug 1832 in Cole, MO  They had 8 children
        2.  John b 1802 (48-1850) TN m 17 Sep 1823 i Nancy McKinney in Cole, MO he died 23 June 1859 They had 6 children
        3.  Allen b 1804 (46-1850) TN 1830 head of family m 1 Jan 1824 Hannah Miller Cole, MO  They had 10 children
        4.  Martin b 1806 (44-1850) TN m 9 Aug 1821 Polly Robinson he died abt 1857 They had 4 children see below
        5.  Charlotte (44-1850) TN living with Martin and his mother Milley also with Clayton and Catherine Gouge (twins age 2 in 1850)
        6.  Nelly (35-1850) TN m 28 Feb 1839 John M. Robison they had 7 children.  She had a son Riley b 1834 fathered by an uncle who was labeled an idiot in a later census record  He was age 15-1850 census  She married 24 Dec 1856 John Jarrett. She apparently died shortly after that  because her children were farmed out to other relatives by the 1860 census
        7.  Female b abt 1815

 

Possibly Susanna Gouge Poe b 11 Jan 1798 TN married Henry McKinney was their daughter or a daughter of Linsey Poe we can't figure this out.  Linsey Poe b 1780 from Wilkes Co., NC  was in Campbell, TN and Whitley, KY.  I think he ended up in Indiana in 1850 census

        4.  James Linsey b 14 Apr 1843 Cole, MO m 24 Apr 1864 Mary S. Medlock he died 20 Nov 1913

A brother to William Gouge was Martin Gouge and he lived in Cole Co also.  He married Elizabeth McKinney and they had 10 children
