William Howard and Robert Rutherford are connected to the family of Stephen Poe

 

Executors are commonly family members. Here, the will of Stephen Poe, who died in 1773 is administered by his widow and men who are also connected with raising Stephen’s children.

*Stephen’s widow. Stephen died in 1773.

** Sarah Howard, daughter of James Howard, married Mial Scurlock – according to other researchers. William Howard, who took in children of Stephen Poe after his death in 1773 must brother to James Howard. The Howard family appears to have come from Henrico County, VA where some of the Amelia/Prince Edward County, VA Poe family can be found.

 

Ordered that William Howard be appt. guardian to Hastin Poe, Larkin Poe, and James Poe. He giving bond with Robert Rutherford, Esq in pounds 1000 each*

 

* These are orphans of Capt. Stephen Poe who died in 1773. See note on William Howard above.

 

William Howard lived on land adjacent to the lands of Simon Poe, JR and brother Stephen Poe (sons of of Simon Poe, Sr.)

Deed of Stephen and Sophia Herndon

To all People to Whom this presents shall come . know ye that I Stephen Herndon and Sophia Hendon my wife and administratricks to the Estate of Simon Poe* Deceased of Chatham County for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds current money to us in hand paid by Richard Kennon of the County aforesaid have bargained sold relieved and made over and by these presents do bargain sell relieve and make over unto the said Richard Kennon his heirs and assigns all our right to a certain piece or tract of land whereon we now live lying to the [   ] of Haw River and adjoining the lands of Stephen Poe, dec. on the [  ] John Morton, dec. on the [  ] Richard Berry, dec. and on the North and William Howards on the West containing three hundred and fifteen acres of land to the same more or less. To have and to hold the same and improvement we the said Stephen Herndon and Sophia Herndon administratricks do Warrant and for ourselves untl the said Richard Kennon his heirs and assigns as Witness our hands and seals this 17th July 1777

Chatham County Court of February 1778

 

David Poe, orphan of Simon Poe, dec'd came into court and made choice of James Massey* as his guardian, who entered into bond with George Herndon and William Howard in pounds 1000.

 

* James Massey was married to Jane Poe, daughter of Simon Poe, SR. See note on William Howard above. George Herndon was father of William Herndon, who married
