A report of extant records showing lands acquired by William Poe and how it was divested

 

 

William Watson and William Poe acquire 400 acres in Orange County (later Culpeper County) by patent

References below imply the land was divided between them, 200 each.

It appears that William Poe acquired 300 acres from James Genn. This land was adjacent to Captain Compton, Josephn Norman and William Poe's other land, which would be the 1737 Poe & Watson patent of 400 acres.

The phrase below, "William Watson & Poe's land now Norman's" seems to imply that some of the patent land has been transferred to [Joseph] Norman. There does not seem to be an extant record for this transfer.

 

William Poe is granted 65 adjacent to Poe's Mountain and Capt. James Compton's land. Note that the 300 acres above is adjacent to William Compton's land.

Note that Francis Browning owns land at "head branches of Battle Run". The William Poe and William Watson land is also on the head branches of Battle Run (see next record)

Thomas Lord Fairfax deeds 200 acres and 65 acres (this must be the Northern Neck grant mentioned above) of land to William Poe in 1752.

 

William Poe must have at this point:

200 acres - his half of the Poe & Watson 1737 patent

300 acres from James Genn

  65 acres from grant in Northern Neck (the Thomas Lord Fairfax 65 acres mentioned below)

200 acres (the Thomas Lord Fairfax 65 acres mentioned below. The grant is not mentioned elsewhere)

 

 

Total land by 1752: 775 acres (less whatever portion of the patent land went to Norman referred to above)

 

 

Cornelius Mitchell purchased 100 of the 200 acres from Poe as well as 50 of the 65 acres

 

Total:  600 acres

Lease of 220 acres where he now dwells, part of William Beverly's tract of land called Wakefield . . on the north side of the south river called Burgess River . . . to the mouth of the river . . up the Hedgeman River  . . mouth of a branch . . . surveyed by Richard Young, surveyor . . saving liberty of making a path or rolling road through the land where it shall be necessary for and desired by one or more tenants of William Beverly.

For lives of William Poe, Lydia his wife and William their son.

Yearly rent on 7 December at Fredericksburg or Falmouth Warehouse of 1000 pounds of tobacco. If Poe shall work more than four tithables besides himself, for each to pay 200 pounds of tobacco additional, and shall not keep thereon any undertenant, shall plant an orchard of one hundred apple trees thirty five feet asunder and two hundred peach trees twenty feet asunder, within a good fence.

Then divided 400 acres granted to William Watson and William Poe by patent 10 June 1737. John Gouge purchased the share of William Watson.
