This page contains documentation in identifying William and Charity Perry of Ashe County NC and Tazewell County VA as parents of Wyatt Perry of Ashe and Alleghany County NC. It also includes all William Perrys appearing in the 1800 to 1840 Ashe censuses.

Note: The 1810 census used only first initial and surname. Extraction's of the first name are speculative and not to be considered conclusive.

In order to understand the significance of the Rowan and Wilkes records in establishing the longevity of the Perry family in the Ashe / Alleghany areas, it is important to know a little of the county history.

According to the North Carolina Encyclopedia:
1. Surry County was formed from Rowan in 1771.
2. Wilkes was formed in 1777 from Surry and the district of Washington
3. Ashe was formed in 1799 from Wilkes.
4. Alleghany was formed in 1859 from Ashe

A note at the Genweb Archives adds "Rowan County was formed in 1753 from Anson County"

Essentially, this means that this entire area was part of Rowan County from 1753 to 1771, and Anson County prior to that.

William Perry and Catherine ( Perry ) Burkett are the earliest Perrys that I have found to date clearly established in the Ashe County area. William Perry, John Perry and Christian Burkett first appear in Ashe County in the 1800 census. Christian Burkett married Catherine Perry who was said to have been the daughter of John Perry and Catherine Croll. (Ashe Heritage cites the Wade Eller Collection as the source. Some researchers show Catherine Cross or Croft.) If this story is indeed true, I believe John of the 1800 Ashe census to be him. Christian Burkett is on the 1787 Wilkes tax list however and no Perry appears there. Christian was married to Catherine in 1787, so it seems likely she was there as well. Many family researchers show them as married in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.

A William Perry appears in the 1759 Rowan County Tax list. This clearly demonstrates a Perry line in the area prior to the American Revolution (1776). This may or may not be the same William that was in the 1800 Ashe census, as I lack sufficient evidence to connect them. The sheer number of William Perrys in the surrounding areas makes it difficult to be decisive. We can only assume that William of Rowan was born before 1740. William of Wilkes (William Perry #1) was born before 1774. How much before is indefinite. William Perry of Ashe 1800 was born before 1755.

So, John, William, and Catherine are the only clearly identifiable Perry's in Ashe County's 1800 census.

The numbers I've assigned after the names are simply for convenience in identifying which William Perry is being discussed at the time.

It is uncertain that this is William Perry #1 of Wilkes and Ashe Counties, but does demonstrate an early record of Perry in the area. It may be William Perry who married Mary Lenoir (see below).

This William Perry remains to be identified. Until recently I had considered him to be William Perry who married Mary Lenoir.. Another researcher had identified these as the parents of Ebeneezer Perry ( who married Barbara Wagoner) of Ashe County. His connections to other Ashe families have not yet been clearly established.

Happy Valley, history and genealogy, by Thomas Hickerson shows that Mary Lenoir, daughter of Thomas Lenoir and Mourning Crawley, married a Mr Perry. It further states that Mary Lenoir died shortly after her marriage. Mr. Perry is said to have been from Franklin County. Edgecomb County NC 1700’s miscellaneous marriages at US Genweb gives April 26, 1762 as the marriage date, clearly naming Mary Lenoir and WILLIAM Perry. The 1790 census contains too little information to be of real use in identifying ages.

Foxworth, Bush, Payne, Bledsoe & Allied Lineages: Lenoir, Pope, Regan, Elkin ... - Page 34 y Sarah Payne Foxworth, Michal Martin Farmer , also shows that William Perry married Mary Lenoir. So, William Perry and Mary Lenoir were married in Edgecomb County NC, on April 26, 1762. A researcher of this family has sent me the following children for William and Mary:

Mary Perry
Isaac Perry
Edwin Perry
Samuel Perry (born 1780)
Richard Perry (born 1782 Wilkes County NC)
John Perry (born 1785)
Solomon Perry (born 1790, married Elizabeth Brewer, moved to Claiborne Tennessee)
Jesse Perry (born 1795)
Ebeneezer Perry ( born 1797, married Barbara Wagoner)

William Perry JR should probably be added to this list as well. Lenoir family researchers found online, name William Perry SR married Mary Lenoir. The accuracy of that information however has not yet been established, and should be considered speculative until further evidence is identified. William JR of the 1840 Ashe census would have been too young.

Now, if we accept that Mary Lenoir Perry died shortly after her marriage, then it appears likely that she was NOT the mother of most, if any of these children. Some researchers found online state that William Perry remarried to Sarah Little. A deed record for Edwin Perry of Pitt County NC, son of William Perry and Sarah, implies that she may have been Sarah Little.

Pitt a deed sg. 23 April 1780 Book N. page 245 county, N.C.
This deed to Edwin Perry shows William Perry (deceased) father.
Sarah Perry (living) mother. Land received as inheritance from James Little SR.

If this is the same William Perry who married Mary Lenoir, then he clearly died before 1780, thus no census record would be found of him, and he could not have been the father of most of the listed children. He may still have been the William Peray of the1759 Rowan tax list. Some researchers show that William Perry who married Mary Lenoir was the son of John Perry and Elizabeth Hunter. I have yet to find records to prove or disprove that assertion.

Court Records (From New River Valley Historical Notes)

1807
A deed from William Perry to Jno. Sayler for 40 acres was duly proven by the oath of Cornelius Vanover

1809
Wm Perry called to jury duty.
Ordered by the court that Richard Perry be overseer of the road in room of Wm. Perry.
A deed from Wm. Perry to Richard Perry for 160 acres proven by Jno. McMillan.

Which William Perry is being referred to in these court minutes is unclear. It is notable that Richard Perry (Ashe County Heritage Article 478, by Violet Bohnert) was born about 1780 to Solomon Perry and his wife Catherine. Solomon and his brother John supposedly came from England to New York, later moving to north western North Carolina. Richard also supposedly had a son named William, who appears to have died prior to the 1850 census.

It appears that identifying the above W. Perry of 1810 with William Perry of 1800 is probably correct. William remains in the 1815 tax list and is gone in the 1820 census. It would be reasonable to conclude that a man of his age would have died by then. However, a second William Perry appears in the 1820 census and that of 1815 may have been him.

I believe William Perry #2 to be that of 1850 Ashe Census H/H 844, William and Charity. Kimberly Wilkoff's transcription shows William as 68 years old and Charity as 64 years old which would place her precisely in range to agree with William #2 here. Ashe Heritage article 477 says the census of 1850 shows both William and Charity as 68 years old.

Combining the 1810 - 1840 censuses, William #2 would have been born between 1780, and 1784. 68 years old in 1850 would place him around 1782. Combining the earlier censuses would place Charity in or around 1780. 68 years in 1850 would again be 1782, and 64 years would make her birth in 1786. It seems reasonable then to conclude that William Perry #2 is also that of 1850.

Here we also notice that this William Perry shows 6 sons and 2 daughters, unless he had other children living in the household at that time. (William Perry's will however names 5 sons and 4 daughters. More on that later.)

William Perry #2 is the only Perry of Ashe County who appears in census records as owning slaves. The 1830 census does show 1 male slave between the ages of 10 and 24. By 1840, no Perry of Ashe County appears owning any slave. Notice also that William only has 3 sons remaining at home at this time. This census would also indicate 5 daughters. Wyatt Perry was living in his own household in 1830, with two other adult males, his wife Charity and daughter Jane.

Here arises a problem, 3 of these daughters should have been in the 1820 census which only shows 2. Several explanations are possible, though I currently consider the first or second the more likely.

1. One of the daughters was missed in the earlier census or may have moved away and returned home.
2. One of these were not his daughter, or a son was incorrectly identified as a daughter in the census record.
3. We have the wrong William Perry.

Since census records often contain such errors or near relatives and servants often lived with the families, I’m confident the third option is not the case.

This would account for 3 of William's sons missing from his household in 1830, assuming that these additional males were Wyatt's brothers.

This is possibly a son of William Perry #2. William #2 has 2 sons of this age range in 1820, and W. Perry has 3 sons of this age range in 1810.
William #2 has no sons of this age range in 1830, which leaves open the possibility #3 is the son of another William Perry. I know nothing else of him. He clearly is not in additional Ashe censuses. Richard Perry ( married Catherine Vanover) had a son William whose family would fit this household perfectly if this were not a JR. (See my notes on Catherine Vanover Perry for additional information on Richard's son William.)

Remember that Ashe Heritage article 477 states that both Charity and William were 68 in the 1850 census. My own reading of the census agrees. Both dates would be reasonably close to William Perry #2 and his wife of the earlier censuses. All other Willam Perry's in the 1850 Ashe census were clearly too young to be named in any of the census records prior to 1850.

William Perry was born Oct 20, 1782, supposedly in Ashe County NC. He married Charity Dean.

This is the last of any of the above William Perrys appearing in Ashe or Alleghany census records.

However, in 1860, William Perry #2 appears in the census of the Eastern District, Tazewell, VA.

In the 1850 Ashe County census Wyatt and Charity Perry have a daughter Cynthia, age 9, born NC. Next door to Wyatt Perry in 1870 Tazewell, is Jeremiah Poe (son of Henry and Jane Poe of the 1860 Tazewell census), age 36, born NC and wife Cynthia age 30, born NC. James E. Poe born about 1864 in NC is listed among their children. West Virginia Certificate of Death #8139 shows James Ivan Poe born NC, June 20, 1864, died June 21, 1941, parents were Jerry Poe and Scythnia Perry. The 1870 Tazewell census shows Rebecca J. Poe, born NC, age 13, with Jeremiah and Cynthia. Likewise death certificate #12411 for Rebecca Jane Poe shows birth NC, Sept. 1, 1858, died 7/16/1938, daughter of Jeremiah Poe and Cynthia Perry. Both death certificates are registered for Mercer County, WV. Henry and Jane Poe had moved to Putnam County WV by this time, and it appears that Jeremiah had taken over the family farm.

Marion Blevins and Wells Blevins were sons of George Blevins and Lydia Duncan of Ashe County, NC (see household #585, 1860 Nathans Creek, Ashe County North Carolina census) . It should be noted that Marion would have been 16, not 10 in 1870. Likewise William should have been 86, not 96. Wells Blevins administered the estate of Wyatt Perry after his death, and raised his grandson Eli Calvin Perry. Calvin is named in the Wyatt Perry estate records. (He also appears as Calvin Blevins in some older records. Many Blevins family researchers show Calvin Perry as a Blevins.)
Wells married Catherine Baker of Ashe County. Catherine's first husband was Hiram Perry, son of Wyatt and Charity, and father of Calvin Perry. Catherine was also a sister of Mary Baker, wife of David Ira Perry (also Wyatt's son). I believe this is adequate evidence to conclude that Wyatt Perry of the 1870 Tazewell census is the same Wyatt Perry of the 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Ashe County NC censuses, and 1880 Alleghany NC census, that his daughter Cynthia married Jeremiah Poe and that Wyatt's parents were William and Charity Perry of Ashe and Tazewell counties.

from: Annals of Tazewell County VA 1800 to 1922

Will Book #9 Tazewell County VA

"William Perry, Will probated September, 1874. Devises his property to his children; Wiate, Jonathan, Sally, Jane Poe, Jacob H.. Isaac M., Ezra D., Francis Evans, and Christine Ashely."

This confirms 5 sons and 4 daughters for William and Charity Perry. If William Perry Jr. were William #2's son, he is not named in this will record. The preceding census records would also imply another daughter.

The will record further confirms much of what has been discussed above in relation to William Perry #2. It appears then that he died sometime after the 1870 census and before September of 1874.

William's wife Charity probably died in Tazewell sometime before the 1870 census.

Wyatt Perry returned to Alleghany NC as per the 1880 census (H/H 182 Prathers Creek, Alleghany NC) and died there around 1882. Wyatt's wife Charity died in July of 1880 and is buried in the Robert L. Perry cemetery, Weaver Road, Alleghany County.

Jane Perry Poe and Henry Poe were in H/H 160 Beaver Pond, Mercer, West Virginia in the household of their son Thomas Poe in 1880.

Christine Perry married William Ashely in Nov 1845.(Ashe County Marriages 1801 to 1872) and appears in H/H 166 in the1850 Perry County KY census (District 2). The 1880 census shows them in Powell County. They continued to live in Kentucky until their deaths.

Frances Perry Evans
Jacob H. Perry
Jonathan Perry
are clearly those of Sycamore (Dekalb County ) Illinois

1860 Dekalb Illinois census shows a Frances Evans (H/H 424, Sycamore) living near a Jacob H. Perry ( H/H 427 Sycamore), both born NC. Their ages were compatible for children of William.

Frances Evans (of Dekalb) was married to Benjamin Evans (1850 Dekalb census) who died in 1854. Benjamin and Frances are both buried at the Charter Grove Cemetery, Sycamore, Dekalb Illinios. (A researcher at Family Search shows them as from Ashe County NC, but doesn't identify France's parents and shows Frances Evans married Benjamin Evans.) A JH and SA Perry have 3 young children buried in the same cemetery, but none can be matched to census records for Jacob.

Jacob H. Perry of Sycamore married Sarah Gunn in 1848. (Kane County Illinois Marriage records) The 1860 census shows Sarah as born in New York.

A Jonathan Perry, married Elizabeth, (both born North Carolina) was also in Sycamore in the 1850 Dekalb census. Jonathan Perry of 1840 Ashe would be of a compatible age. Jonathan and Elizabeth ( of Dekalb) had 2 children also born in NC. The 1840 Ashe shows additional children that should have been in the 1850 census however, and combined with the age differences recorded for their wives, could lead some to question that they are the same.

The 1856 census for Cass Township, Jones County Iowa names these missing children however, and does show them as born in North Carolina. A marriage record for Alice E Perry to Alonzo Keiser ( Jones County Iowa marriages, Rootsweb) dated for March 19, 1882 names her parents as Jonathan Perry and Elizabeth Sterling. A cemetery record for Jonathan and Elizabeth at U.S. Gennet (Linn County cemetery records) shows that they are buried in the Oak Hill cemetery, Central City Iowa. The age at death is incorrect, however I have no doubt that it is this couple.

Jonathan Perry died Oct 20, 1856. He was in the 1856 census, but not found in 1860. Elizabeth Sterling Perry died Nov 3 1888. She appears in the 1860 Jones County Iowa, 1870 and 1880 Linn County Iowa censuses.

Additionally, census records show that Jonathan and Elizabeth had a son Zachariah born about

1850 in Illinois. The 1880 Dekalb County Illinois census for Lorenzo Dow Evans (h/h 187 Sycamore) , son of Benjamin Evans and Francis Perry shows Zachariah Perry born about

1851 in Illinois, shown to be a cousin to the head of household. That should remove any remaining doubts as to the relationships of these families.

Another researcher shows Jonathan Perry married Rebecca Hash as William's son, but I don't know what that is based on. I believe him more likely to be the son of Wyatt and Charity, but I don‘t currently consider that as conclusive. At this time it remains unknown who Wyatt’s son Jonathan married.

The presence of 3 persons bearing the same names as William's children (especially Frances Evans living that near a Jacob H. Perry), all appearing in Sycamore, in the same time frame, all of acceptable ages and all born in North Carolina, convinces me that these were the children of William and Charity Perry of the 1850 Ashe County census.

In summation: It is possible that William Perry #2 of the earlier censuses was a different William than that of the 1850 Ashe census. I believe the evidence indicates they were the same. Jonathan Perry of Dekalb and Jonathan Perry of 1840 Ashe , I believe to be the same. Discrepancies are easily cleared with the 1856 census.

additional citings of William Perry in Ashe or Alleghany records:

Alleghany County North Carolina Deeds:

Oct. 15, 1827 Wyatt Perry purchased 50 acres from William Allison. William Perry and John McMillan named witnesses.
Aug 30, 1837 Wyatt Perry sold 100 Acres at Elk Creek to George Reeves. William Perry and Andy Fields witnesses.

This is not a complete listing of William Perry in land records. Ashe currently has only it's more recent records available online. Ashe County deeds may supply additional information. I haven't had the opportunity to read those yet. Their website currently indicates Ashe birth records are in the process of being prepared to be added in addition to older land records.

These books contain articles on several of Frances Perry Evan’s children, most notably Lorenzo Dow Evans, Lucinda Evans married Devine Dean, Ira Evans married Nancy Devine, Mary Belinda Evans married Alfred King. Look for articles on Lorenzo Dow Evans, Ira Evans, Devine Dean, and Alfred King.

They essentially follow Benjamin Evans and family from Ashe County NC to Dekalb County Illinois. It was from these articles that the following was obtained.

Frances Perry Evans of Dekalb County Illinois, was the daughter of William Perry, born Oct 20, 1782, Ashe County NC, died in Virginia. (will indicates Tazewell county).

William Perry married Charity Dean, daughter of Jacob Dean and Frances.

William was the son of Ebenezer Perry and wife Christina.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In conclusion,

I am currently trying to determine if this was the same Ebenezer Perry of Guilford County NC, who married Christina Wyatt, and whether these were descended from William Perry who married Mary Lenoir. Evidence to that effect remains inconclusive.

My direct line in brief:

Ebenezer Perry married Christina

son

William Perry married Charity Dean (daughter of Jacob Dean and Frances)

son

Wyatt Perry married Charity Perry (daughter of Samuel Perry of Ashe County)

son

David Ira Perry married Mary Baker (daughter of William Bolin Baker and Elizabeth Miller)

son

Hiram Perry married Sarah Candice Roup (daughter of John Roup and Mary Carter)

son

John Freel Perry married Lena Hall (daughter of Riley Winton Hall and Rebecca Ann Larue.) John and Lena were my grandparents.
