William Erastus Poe was the son of James Bradford Poe (d. 1850) who in married 1833 to Nancy Bennett (or Bennet) Clark, daughter of John Clark). John Clark took in the orphans of James Bradford Poe when he died young in 1850. As for the lineage of James Bradford Poe, Guilford County, North Carolina records indicate he was the son of William Poe (d. 1830) and Sarah.

William Poe (d. 1830) and James Poe (d.1812), who died in Guilford County, N.C., appear to be grandchildren of Simon Poe, Sr. (d. 1793). Each had a son named “James” who they name in their wills. However, the son of James Poe (d. 1812) has been identified as James Shepherd Poe.  The only other James in the records who could be the son of William Poe is (d. 1830) is James Bradford Poe.

These early Guilford Settlers (William Poe – d. 1830 and James Poe – d. 1812) were either brothers or first cousins. One should note that two sons of Simon Poe, SR married Bradford sisters. Simon Poe, Jr married Sophia Bradford; Stephen Poe married her sister Hannah.

It is not surprising, then, that we find this James “Bradford” Poe.
