Our goal is to identify the kinship of men with the last name Poe or variant spelling. As more join the project, we will be able to identify various lines of descent.

Important Note: You must be male and a direct descendant of a Poe ancestor to participate since this is an analysis of “markers” on the Y-chromosome (which only males have and which is passed from father to son, intact, except for random mutations).

The initial cost is $99 for the “12-marker” test that shows what family you belong to. The process only requires a cotton swab rubbed on the cheek lining inside the mouth. Bobby Jack Poe and William Ernest Poe both descend from Stephen Poe who settled in Choctaw County, MS. This line appears connected to George Poe (who likely was Stephen’s father). George Poe was in Madison Co, AL early in the 1800s and in TN prior to that. This line seems to stem from Jonathan Poe of the 1790s in Caswell County, NC and before that Culpeper County, VA.

Bobby Dale Poe research by this family shows descent from John Poe who married Elisabeth Parks in Caswell County, North Carolina. The bond is dated 12 Jan 1793 Bondsman: Solomon Parks Witness: Ald Murphey Bond #: 000017520. The research then links as son, James Poe, b. 08 Nov 1803, NC, who married Mary "Polly" Baggett. He settled in Franklin Co, TN, and

William Eric Poe descends from William Poe (wife Lydia) found first in Caroline County, VA and by 1737 in Culpeper County, VA.

Mason Poe descendant of EDMUND POE b-c1773 Va. married c. 1803 NANCY TRIPLETT b-c1784 Caroline Co Va.

Noel Rex Poe …Ancestors from Franklin County, Kentucky associated with those of Mason Poe (above) quote from an email states. “paper trails definitely goes back through Fielden Wood Poe (b: 1809, m: 1830 to Letty Nicholson, d: 1902) to his father William Poe (b: abt. 1769, m: 1802 to Charity Rogers, d: 1854). And William Poe's father was John Poe, b: about 1749 and maybe married a Sally (unknown).)”

Todd Poe was born in Baker, Oregon. His father was Orval Verlin Poe. Nothing more is known.

William Moody Poe descends from James Poe (Jr.) (born 1797) who married Mary McMillian. This family settled in Fayette County, AL alongside the family of Major James Poe. Tradition states that James Poe JR is the son of Major James Poe.

James Franklin Poe descends from a Franklin County, TN Poe family. His grandfather, Albert Sumner Poe moved from Franklin County TN to Henry County TN as a young man around 1915. His father James Henry Poe (born around 1864) is buried in the cemetery at Tracy City TN (Franklin County)
