HOGUE CREST
Shield contains a cross sidefaced crosslet in the center-SA (sable or

Atop this helment is a silver crown with an outgrowning "fruited oak tree"
from which hangs a small shield showing a bent arm holding an arrow
pointing down.

HOGE_HOGUE
1425..Patrick Hoge & Gilbert Hoge, Squires (listed among the gentlemen who
devydit the marches betwixt Ridbeth & Bermosyde)
The laird in whose name this division was made, was the first to drop
the spelling de Haga for the spelling Haig, which is still in use. It is
probable that "Hoge" is only one varient of "Haga or Haig" and that the
Hoge's are descendants of Petrus de Haga, who came from Normandy about
1150. This Peter of the Dyke, probably came from Cape de la Hague in
Normandy.

John Alexander never signed the Oath of Allegiance after the War
Between the States.
John Alexander was a Postmaster in Drew Co. There was a lady from PA
who received
her newspaper through the post office. A particular day the news did
not arrive, when he
delivered the paper the next day she hautily asked, "Where were you
yesterday?" he replied there
was no newspaper arrived at the post office. She rather doubted him
and implied he kept it
to read, to which he replied "I wouldn't read your damned old yankee
newspaper."
John Alexander was around 6'3" high cheek bones and narrow of face. He
had a very good
sense of humor and was well liked by everyone.
In the 1950's Margaret Abston-Richardson visited the black Mammy of
the John Alexander
Hogue's in Drew Co, AR. She was very old and with very bad eye sight.
Margaret got right
up in her face and with her hands she felt all around Margarets face,
when she came upon the
very high cheek bones, she said, "Lawsy you is Masr John's Child.
During the War Between the States Mary Jane was working at the Potato
Hill house, as the word
came " the yankees is a comin'". Running fast as she could down the
old plank road, she grabbed some special sheets she had made-- for
when John came home. As she ran passed him with her hoops just a
flappin' she heard "Hide it good- Hide it good! It was the brother of
John, William Cordelia who had come home on leave and was hiding to
keep from being captured by the yankees. After the yankees plundered
all they could, frightened and ran off the slaves, they left--every
thing finally settled down, slaves returned, and everyone went back to
work. Mary Jane and Wm. Cordelia came out of the slough.

Margaret Abston-Richardson relates the following: During the War
Between the States, when all the 9th AR INF road away from Drew
County, they had two tag alongs; James Monroe and his slave companion.
They became the waterboys for the 9th. The only records I can find
(BB) are the pension application by his widow, Mary Eliza Hogue.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy approved a supplemental for
James Monroe
Hogue as being the brother of John Alexander Hogue in 1-2000.

HILLIARD/WOODWARD JOURNAL
written by Doris Hilliard dau of Armistead D. Hilliard &
Arminta Rebecca Harris-Hilliard.
It was written by Doris Hilliard dau. of Armistead Dandridge Hillard &
Arminta Rebecca Harris Hilliard & was partially told to her by one of the
children of Armistead Dandridge & Suvilla Pearson Woodward Hilliard
( I think, so it says on the paper.)
Richard Clark Woodward married Rebecca Woodward B.6-17-1803 (1st cousins)
at Winnsboro, SC.
To this union was born
Isaac Means, Suvilla Pearson and William Clark.
Richard Clark Woodward had two brothers John & George and one sister,
Ellen.
Both John & George were prosperous merchants and cotton buyers in
Winnsboro & Camden, SC. Both had land holdings in Fairfield County on
Jackson Creek. ( Same area as the GIBSON & GLADNEY families 1765-1800ŐS)
Suvilla Pearson Woodward (female) married Armistead Dandridge Hilliard in
Winnsboro, SC. Armistead Hilliard was a merchant in Winnsboro at the time
of their marriage. She was 23 when she married. Her father Richard Clark
Woodward, was sheriff at that time. He operated a hotel "INN", but the
family lived in a brick home.
Suvilla went to college at Charlotte, and took Caroline, a slave, along to
wait on her. Suvilla was talented in music and taught in Winnsboro before
and after her marriage. She had a beautiful piano given to her as a girl.
This she took with her when she married. Dan & Suvilla Hilliard lived in
"a big two story house" with porches upstairs and below. All around the
house was a great big lawn where the children use to play. The house was
near a college and Doris and others were playing on the campus when the
YANKEES moved in on our lawn during the War Between the States.
The yanks went into the house and were shown over the house by Doris'
father Armistead Dandridge Hilliard. When they reached the second floor
they saw a stairway leading to the attic but passed it up, for some
reason. Fortunately they did , as Suvilla Hilliard( Mother in law to
Agusse Miller (1806/1914)) had hidden a few things to eat. That was all
that was left of their food when the yanks left . Suvilla had also buried
a trunk full of confederate money and a lot of gold, Hester helped her,
but the yanks found it and dug it up.
They pillaged and burned the store. They rolled hogsheads of sugar, flour
and molasses from the west Indies into the streets, used what they wanted
and stomped on the rest. They took her square piano and fed the horses
from it. They took everything they wanted from within and around the
house, and in the shooting during the raid and while camped about the
house shot the bullet holes in Grandpa Woodward's picture.
Being reduced to virtual poverty, the family moved the next November to
Louisiana. In 1860, people were going West from South Carolina in great
numbers. Robert C Woodward furnished the money and about 25 slaves for
William Woodward to go to Louisiana and buy land. A year later, Isaac
Means and Mary Hopkins Woodward moved from Winnsboro (with about 10-15
slaves to Rocky Mount, LA, to join William Woodward.
Richard Woodward furnished money and slaves in each case. From Rocky
Mount,LA , Isaac Means Woodward went to the war with the 1ar LA Brigade.
While he was gone Minnie Woodward was born. In November after the close of
the war (1865) William Woodward came to South Carolina and got his only
Sister Suvilla Hilliard, and her Mother and 5 children.
The 5 Children were:
Richard Clark Woodward Hilliard
William Clark Hilliard
Armistead Dandridge Hilliard mar Armita Rebecca Harris
Rebecca Hilliard
Mary Hilliard
Isaac Means Hilliard, born at Rocky Mount, age about 21, died at the
Hilliard house in the spring before Ike(Isaac Fitzgerald Hilliard) was
born in Oct.
The group traveled by train to Atlanta, and from there by train to Mobile.
At Mobile they took a boat to New Orleans, from there to Shreveport by
boat. There they were met by a wagon train and one carriage and were
carried to Rocky Mount. Armistead D Hilliard & Richard Clark Woodward
stayed in Winnsboro to settle their businesses.
Richard Clark Woodward bought a boat, "The Daniel Morton", and he and
Armistead D. Hilliard operated it from Shreveport to New Orleans. They
bought and sold goods along the Red & Mississippi Rivers, carrying
passengers to & from New Orleans as well as cargoes of goods. As these 2
men cut quite a dash on Royal Street, in N.O. they got in debt and
mortgaged their property to CHAFF, of New Orleans.
In September of 1867, Suvilla Hilliard died and was buried at Rocky Mount,
LA. When Armistead D Hilliard died, Isaac Means Woodward took Armistead D.
Hilliard,II and Rebecca Hilliard to raise. William Clark Woodward &
Richard Clark Woodward took the other 5 children. R.C.Woodward died in
1870 and is buried at Rocky Mount,LA.
The farm on the Red River at Rocky Mount had 1,400 acres, 400 under
cultivation. But things went from bad to worse! in 1870 they had a drought
and made only 21 bales of cotton. CHAFF of N.O. called for their note.
Both of the parents were gone, most of the property now gone. So the sons,
Isaac and William Woodward moved to Arkansas through the influence of John
and Mattie Robinson of Winnsboro who had settled at Rock Springs.( could
these be the parents of John Robinson who died in the civil war and was
the first husband of Nancy Jane Gladney, dau of Edward Bruce Gladney, who
married John McKeown Reep?)
Isaac Woodward,son of Rebecca & R.C.Woodward, bought 250 acres for $800.00
from VanLandingham. William Woodward 1828/1896 arrived in February and
Mary "Mollie" B. REAP (dau. of Rachel GLADNEY & Jonas Reap) married him in
July. He sold his place and moved on her place, which was a quarter of a
mile due east of the Harris place.
It took about 6 days to make the trip from Rocky Mount to Rock Springs.
They crossed the Saline River at Cornish Landing: spent the night there.
Mary Hopkins Woodward & Grandma Woodward along with the smallest children
traveled by carriage.
When they got to Tom (Thomas M.) GIBSON'S (son of Zachariah Gibson) (later
Betsy's husband) six miles from the new home, they were asked to spend the
night. All of the family stayed except for Armistead,Isaac & some Negroes.
Armistead D Hilliard traveled with Isaac Woodward along with the Negroes,
driving seven wagons, it was late, dark (Feb) when they got to the new
home, it was raining and freezing. They took rocks and broke the ice to
get the harness off the horses. When they all went into the house they
dicovered they had no "fire" so they went to bed with out any warm food or
fire.
The next morning Armistead D. HILLIARD was sent to Edward C. REAPS
(Mollie's Brother) to get fire. It was a half mile away. The Negroes got
wood and set up the furniture. While at the Reap"s, he ate breakfast with
them and got not only fire but some breakfast for Isaac. Long up in the
day William, GM Woodward, and Mary, along with the children arrived at the
new house.
SO!! HERE THE WANDERERS WERE AT THE END OF THE TRAIL. A RICH, SOCIALLY
PROMINENT FAMILY REDUCED TO POVERTY, HARDSHIP AND OBLIVION, IN A PIONEER
COUNTRY, NEVER AGAIN TO REGAIN WHAT "WENT WITH THE WIND."
ISAAC WOODWARDS place was about A MILE NORTH OF THE ROCK SPRINGS CHURCH.
Armistead D II lived there for four years. He then went to Cornersville
and worked with Martin Maroney. He farmed and worked in the store and
postoffice. While there some one broke into the store and R.C. was
summoned to the trial which took place in Monticello under J.G.Williamson.
He stayed there about 8 months. He left there with Dick and went to
Filmore, LA to an academy: Grinswold was president. They worked their way
for one year. Left Filmore at the close of school, went to Rocky Mount and
stayed 6 mo with Martin Maroney. He then went to Annie McKeown's (Arminta
Rebecca Harris Hilliard's only sister). He stayed there and went to
Garners Academy. Arminta was also there.
In making preparations to marry, Armistead D. II bought 162 acres of land
adjoining Grandma Harris (Sara Bassett) and Annie (Mrs. Edward L. )
McKeowns'. He cleared land built a house, barn, etc and made a crop,
harvested it, got out wood, all in preparation for the big event. On Dec
12 they were married at Grandma's house by Rev. John Blakeley (Methodist
Preacher, of course). They were married late in the evening. They had a
supper of turkey, boiled ham and venison. A cake at each end of the table,
frosted in white and trimmed in fancy candy. In the center of the table
was a mound of "snowballs" (cakes baked in China cups and frosted white.)
They had boiled custard and ambrosia. There was "PIDKIN" ( a tray made by
her father full of oranges and nuts..filberts & chesnuts.) Her wedding
dress, gray in color, and fixings came from Pine Bluff.
All the Bassett-Hilliard-Woodward-Harris families and friends were there.
After the wedding they drove
home in Grandma's top buggy behind "Olde Dolly".
Grandpa Bassett (James Kirby Bassett) originally bought the place that
Uncle Jim & Aunt Ann Clegg Bassett lived and died on.
Gp & Gm Bassett (Kirby & Rebecca Clower Bassett) lived there until their
death. Uncle Jim took over the place--gin, store and acreage.
Grandmother Harris (Sarah Bassett) was a tall, large but not fat womean.
She had blue eyes and red hair.
Most of the Bassett family had red hair, but no freckles. She was deeply
religious, a prominent member
of the Methodist Church at the Campground, where her membership, as well
as most of her family, remained
until her death.
She was surrounded with plenty, fine stock, stallion, buggy horses, riding
horses and etc. Fine Jersey cows,
Berkshire hogs, grey brama chicken, turkeys, fifty bee gums, sheep, a
large orchard, fine apple orchard,
plum thickets, as well as other fruit. Grandpa James Thomas Harris
naturalized l'shallots in his apple orchard
where they grew until after I was large enough to remember gathering them
for Grandma, to put in some
guinea dressing. She was a famous cook. That's where Ollie & Mama (Arminta
Rebecca Harris Hilliard)
got their talent.
Her home was in the midst of a great ALL hardwood forest. Her
grandchildren are today still using her method of curing hams and bacon,
sausage, lard, barrels of ribbon cane syrup (sarghum was a disgrace),
large stone jars full of apples, peach, crab apple preserves and honey in
the comb. She tied the tops of the jars with brown paper.
She bought green coffee, parched it herself and ground it in a mill
fastened to the wall. She had a good
garden, growing the first "love apples" in her community and a yard full
of flowers. She was long on 'erbs
sage, mint, catnip, basil (I can smell it yet), yellow dock and calamis
root, slippery elm, black bow, also
mullen and smart weed. These 'erbs were used mostly for medicine and
almost entirely by the natives of the
community for what ailed them. She was long on doctors and their
saddle-bag pills. Her home was a mecca for people throughout that secions.
She gave advice freely, but also gave to all who came and went.
Grandma Harris was the best natured woman in the world. She sat by the
fireplace in an old fan-backed
rocker, with a cushin of briar stitched pieces in the bottom. Her Bible,
hymn book, almanac, and Methodist
literature lay on a spool table near by. On the mantly was a large Seth
Thomas clock that you wound by pulling down the weights, and a palm leafed
fan that was bound in black velvet ribon. She kept an open and shut
fam on the top of her trunk to carry to Church. She slept on a spool bed.
Between her house and Uncle William Woodwards house was the famous pigeon
roost, where Mama
and Papa remember seeing them by the thousands, in their field is a fault
in the earth's surface. It was
behind this bluff that the people of the community hid their stock when
the "yankees" came near.
The ground is covered with rocks in Grandma's old place. They could never
get good water, as in most parts
of the country. They bought this place and moved there in November 1854.
They had no children for several years, they used to net birds (the net
made of hand spun cords, with long wings on each side of the sort of a
tunnel)Quail were driven into this tunnel. They also hunted dear,
squirrels, turkeys
and etc. He used a rifle that was loaded with lead bullets (he molded
powder, shot and caps) The cap box was
silver. On the gun stock is a deer head with antlers in silver. The
inscription says " a gift to Uncle Isaac
Woodward." At his death the gun went to Isaac Hilliard. He also called the
hogs with William's silver-
mounted horn. It came from SC. Arminta Rebecca had a loom on which she
spun and wove cotton and woolen cloth, as well as "coverlets." She carded
and spun woolen thread from which she knitted caps, mittens,
socks and stockings.
Armistead D. planted a large Arboryitaw tree in the fall before they
married. It is still healthy. He also planted one of the best orchards in
the community. There are still two nice apple trees that bore well. It is
still called the
"OLD HILLIARD CHEESE APPLE", it's a deep yellow color and is found
throughout the community in the
farm orchards. It is a seeding tree.
Armistead Dandridge Hilliard, it is supposed, was born at Winnsboro. His
Father and Mother are not known.
He had three brothers, Bart, Marion and Edwin. Bart and Marion were
merchants. Each was wealthy and had more than Armistead Dandridge
Hilliard.
The Hilliards scattered to all parts of America.
The Bassett, Clower and Harris families came to AR by wagon train after
the Indian Wars (ca 1848)./
They first stopped at Campground. The Clower's settled there and the
Bassett & Harris families went
on to Rock Springs. The Harris's bought their place and moved there in Nov
1854.
Grandma (Sarah?) Jane Bassett Harris (Mother's Mother) born and married in
Tallapoosa, AL and was
deeply religious, a prominent Church member, where she, John, Jim, Grandma
Rebecca Clower Bassett
and Grandpa James Kirby Bassett are buried in the Cemetery at Campground.
Grandma Woodward, Isaac, William Woodward, Isaac Hilliard, Mary "Mollie"
B. Reap Woodward
are buried at Rock Springs. Their church membership was there as well as
Mama and Papa's.
Mamas Parents were Sarah Bassett & James Thomas Harris.
Grandparents were James Kirby and Rebecca Clower Bassett. (dau. of
Jonathan & Mary Shuler Clower)
They had seven girls and two boys:
all born Talapossa Al & moved to Drew Co, lived to be an old age.

DATE for length of marriage seems to be wrong, as their marriage was
1887
makes 13 years of marriage. George was 20 at marriage and Maggie was
16..
that would make the 33 above more correct than 35.
