Occupation: Farmer, Laborer, Ran Boarding House

Notes for Martha Lucy Harton:

Family tradition is her surname was Hardin, but records support that it was Harton (the transcription of her father spells the name Horton).

Children of Simon Poe and Martha Harton are:

+      2                 i. Wyatt L.6 Poe, born October 10, 1834 in NC; died February 28, 1899 in Grant Co., AR.

3                ii. James H. Poe, born 1836 in AL3.  He married Charlotte; born Abt. 1844 in KY3.

Notes for James H. Poe:

Living adjacent to Simon B. Poe, father, and family in the 1860 Census for Saline Co., Arkansas.  A "Harding" Poe is reflected as living in the household of Simon B. Poe in the 1870 Census in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas.  He is two years older than his brother Simon W. Poe, indicating that this is James H. Poe.  He was probably given his mother's name, Hardin or Harton.  We do not know what happened to his wife, Charlotte, who was reflected in the 1860 Census in Saline Co., Arkansas.

        4               iii. Simon W. Poe, born 1838 in AL4.  He married (1) Mary J. Abt. 1860; born 1841 in AL4.  He married (2) Elizer E. M. Aft. 1870; born 1837.

Notes for Mary J.:

Mary J. Poe does not appear in the Simon B. Poe household in the 1850 Census in Fayette Co., Alabama.  She does appear in the Simon B. Poe household in the 1860 Census in Saline Co., Arkansas.  She is reflected immediately below Simon W. Poe and, along with him, is reflected as a farmer.  She is most likely the wife of Simon W. Poe.  Simon W. Poe appears in the household of Simon B. Poe in the 1870 Census in Pulaski Co., Arkansas, but Mary does not.

5               iv. Carson Poe, born 1839 in AL5.

+      6                v. Amey Angelina Poe, born 1842 in Fayette Co., AL; died 1865 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR.

Walton November 10, 1858 in Saline Co., AR13, son of Thomas W. Walton.  He was born 1836 in MS14, and died Abt. July 1864 in Civil War near Atlanta, GA15.

Notes for Amey Angelina Poe:

Family tradition is that Amey Angelina died of heartbreak following the death of her husband, James W. Walton, in the Civil War.  Her children were then raised by her parents, Simon B. Poe and Martha Lucy Hardin.

Notes for James W. Walton:

James Walton came to Arkansas in the late 1850's and married Amey Angelina Poe in Saline Co, AR, on November 10, 1858.  He was a carpenter for about one year, then engaged in farming.  He enlisted July 9, 1861, as a private in Co. A, 11th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (the "Saline Tornadoes").  His unit was sent to Ft. Pillow, TN, in November 1861 and was stationed on Island No. 10 in the Mississippi River near Tiptonville, TN. He was promoted to corporal on February 1, 1862.  On April 8, 1862, the island was bombarded by Union mortor boats and gunboats.  The Confederate forces surrendered on April 15, 1862.  Most of the 11th Reg't were captured, but James Walton apparently escaped with several other members of the 11th and were formed into a (New) Co. E, 2nd Reg't Arkansas Infantry on May 25, 1862.  His last records with the 11th Reg't indicates he was "Promoted to lieutenant in Gen. Bragg's Army, 2 Ark," but the records of the 2nd Reg't do not support this statement.  He re-enlisted for a two-year period at that time and, according to his war records, was "entitled to bounty."  Effective July 1, 1862, he was transferred to Co. K of the 2nd Reg't and was promoted to 1st sergeant.  He participated in numerous engagements with the 2nd Regiment, including Richmond, KY (Aug 1862) and Perryville, KY (Oct 1862).  In December 1862, the 2nd Reg't was reassigned to Cleburne's Division, where it fought in the battles of Stone's River (Dec 13, 1862 - Jan 3, 1863), the Tullahoma Campaign in June 1863, Liberty Gap (Jun 24-26, 1863), Chickamauga (Sep 19-20, 1863, where according to his war records James was wounded), the Seige of Chattanooga (Sep - Nov, 1863), the Battle of Chattanooga, Ringgold Gap, Dalton, Resaca, and the Atlanta Campaign.  He appears on the Muster Roll for Co. K for the period Jun 30, 1864, to Aug 31, 1864, with the annotation that he was killed sometime during the period.  It is likely he was killed at either Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864 (Confederate casualties 1,113 killed, 2,500 wounded and 1,183 missing) or in Atlanta on July 22, 1864 (Confederate casualties 2,482 killed, 4,000 wounded, and 2,017 missing).  It is unknown where his body was buried.
