The maiden name of Joseph Hackney's wife is unknown but she was probably his second wife and the widow or perhaps daughter of Robert Williams of old Bute County, North Carolina. Joe Hackney is mentioned in the land records of that county in 1770. On 11 November, 1772, he was made guardian of Seth Williams, orphan of Robert Williams. John Edwards and Askanaz Williams were named as securities. On 1 January, 1773, papers regarding Williams' estate mention Joseph Hackney, Jr. and
Sr., as well as Ann Hackney.

Of the children of Joseph Hackney: Joseph, Jr. was born in 1752 and died 18 February, 1839. He married Ann, daughter of Capt. Charles Stewart of Chatham County; William married Alice, "Alsey", daughter of Charles Stewart; Daniel married Mary, daughter of Robert Marsh; Robert married Lucy Weaver; Lot married Tabitha Ward and removed to Tennessee; Hightower removed to Georgia; John born in 1778, married Elizabeth, daughter of Askanaz Williams; and Anne of our line married Mark Bynum,
