Poe Marriages: Chatham County, North Carolina Marriage Index, Book 1, 1851-1902.

Transcribed from the book at the Register of Deeds office in Pittsboro. There is no copy of the original returned marriage license/certificate on file there for any marriage until 1877 (one surviving license for that year). For many years after that, the files of licenses are largely incomplete. Any entry after 1877 marked N. L. means that I could not find a license. The only information available is that entered in the index book itself.

The entries in the index for the earliest marriages give the names of the bride and groom, the minister's name, the date, and a reference to "Marriage Book 1" and "Marriage Book 2". These books survive, but give no other information.

Beginning about 1873, the information given in the index included the names and ages of the bride and groom, the name of the person performing the marriage, the date and place (usually township or a residence) of the marriage,, and the names of the witnesses. It does not include the names of the parents. (Tough luck for those with missing licenses.) If I did find a license, I'm giving the name of the parents of the Poe individual and the names of any witnesses named Poe. The register has a groom's index only. I went through the bride's column looking for Poe names and hope I didn't miss any. They are listed below the grooms' list, alphabetically by the first letter of the groom's name.

I have done my best with the various handwritings, but freely admit that there may be transcription errors, especially for single initials.

For some couples, I have added notes referring to other documents that MAY more fully identify the couple. These are suggestions for research only. All census references are to Chatham County.

If a license does exist, get a copy. It will supply more detail.
