William Erastus Poe was the son of James Bradford Poe (d. 1850) who in married 1833 to Nancy Bennett (or Bennet) Clark, daughter of John Clark). John Clark took in the orphans of James Bradford Poe when he died young in 1850. As for the lineage of James Bradford Poe, Guilford County, North Carolina records indicate he was the son of William Poe (d. 1830) and Sarah. This William Poe appears to be the orphan son of Simon Poe JR (d.1773) and Sophia Bradford. The court in Chatham County, NC apprenticed William to a blacksmith when the boy was 14 in 1783.
