Gilbert Poe
in the Indian Territory Census of 1900 must be the same Gilbert Poe in Pulaski Co,
AR in 1880 and listed in the will of John Poe in 1859. The age of 35 in 1880
fits the age of 55 for the Indian Territory Gilbert Poe in 1900. And, we see
that wife Caroline and son Lewis (age 8 in 1880) is next in the 1900 census
aged 27.
Another
former slave I want to track is Robert Poe. He was 42 in 1870. He and wife were
born in North Carolina. In the 1870 census we see that most children were
"at school". Robert stayed nearby the old Poe farm in Grant (Saline)
County, Arkansas, where he had been a slave, identified in the will of John
Poe.

Gilbert is listed as a farmer in Indian
Territory and his son is a laborer. Son Lewis is a day laborer -- probably on
his father's or nearby farms.
