Samuel Poe land
along the Peumansend. Land sold to Samuel Poe by Matthew Collins in
1707 is described as being “105 acres, part of 4200 acres granted to John Medows and Henry Petars
by patent 17 April 1667 in St. Ann’s Parish . . . Mr. Macco’s land on the west
side of the south fork of Pumansend Swamp.” Also in 1707, Matthew Collins and
Mary his wife of
Samuel Poe’s lands fell within St. Mary's Parish in
Essex County and was on the south side of a branch of the south fork of the Peumansend
The name Peumansend
There is at least one mention
of a Samuel Poe and a William Poe in

dates from this period is difficult. March 25th was the beginning
of the legal or civil year. Some sources help by stating a date such as

family is related to the Poe family of Amelia
/ Prince Edward County, which has yet to be connected to the Poe
family of Essex/Caroline County. Also note that close ties connect the “George”
family with the family of Richard Straughan to Lucy, the dauther of Simon Poe
SR. Simon Poe SR was born around the time of these deeds in 1707/8. He died in
1793 in Chatham Co. NC. It is not known if Simon Poe SR is truly a son of this
Samuel Poe but is surely close kin. Also, we do not actually known where Simon
Poe SR was born nor do we know where he was raised and educated. This is true
of all these early Poe men and the women mentioned later (Katherine Poe and
Sarah Poe).

Sidebar: McDonald Poe, in his
book Samuel Poe of Essex County, assumes, upon an erroneous reading of
some records, that Mary, the wife of Matthew Collins, was Samuel Poe’s
daughter. This deed clearly puts the matter to rest. Mary Collins was the “only
daughter and heire apparent of Henry Peters” the co-owner of the Meders/Peters
grant and probably the source of Matthew Collins ownership of a considerable
portion of the land that see him selling through a series of deeds.

felonious takeing a saddle from Richard Edwards, and the court having heard ye evidence
& arguments of both partys, do believe him to be guilty, & therefore do
order ye sheriff to give the sd Poe at
ye Publick Whipping Post of this county fifteen lashes well laid on his bare back & do further order ye
sd Poe return ye saddle aforesd. to
sd. Richard Edwards; and also he sd Poe be and remain in custody of ye sherif
till he enteres into bond in sum of twenty pounds currt. money & give two
good securitys each in ye sum of ten pounts currt. money for his good behaviour
& likewise till he either pays or gives good security for ye paymt. of all
the costs of this day and yt. he be then discharged.

William Poe in debt, it is
interesting that it involves the Edwards family, involved in the Samuel Poe
sattle stealing incident. And this is happening within a year of Samuel Poe’s
death. One might consider that Benjamin Poe is seeming more mature and taking
on more responsibility – as in the petition above. Benjamin is established such
that the court even refers to “Benjamin Poe’s bridge”

will satifie & pay ye Balla. of ye Judgmt. which ye sd Plt obtained agt
the sd deft. on ye 17th Day of January last and sd attachment is dismist. Francis Starn
making oath that he attended eleven days as an evidence for John
Getar on his Atta. aft the estate of Robt.
